Vinatge Digital Delays Spotted

Delta Lab ADM-512 Super Time Line Digital Delay, VG, $69

Ibanez DM-500 Digital Delay, VG, $29

Yamaha GEP-50, VG, $25

My buddy has these for sale at his guitar shop. He doesn't care much for rack gear and usually blows it out cheap. PM me if you are interested.

Actually, I'm astonished it was mentioned at all. I tried both it and the Modulation Modeller in my guitar systems. They'd sound great at first, but after a few minutes something would start bothering me about the sound. I'd bypass the Line 6 boxes, and it would go away. Both are currently in the seldom used pile.

What I'm surprised haven't been mentioned are the 70's era Ibanez delays. I've got 3 different ones, one with harmonizer functions. Not perfect for fidelity, but great for all sorts of things from straight echo to really monstrous flange and weirdness stuff.

It's one of those boxes that I don't think really sounds good on guitar. The ping pong thingy is cool sometimes, but I usually dig it on other things, such as vocals.

My top vote goes for the blue (2U) MXR Digital Delay.
I also like the Maestro Echoplex.
The MXR and Lexicon PCM41 are almost identical sounding IMO. The thing that lets the PCM41 down is when you turn it off it forgets the delay setting you last had it on.

Old ass Digitech RDS 1900.
Gritty sound with cool repeat button and time knob.
Just grab the knob and have fun
Does some bad flanging and something else too.
I just use it for the grit.

That's the trick. Gives you something like 450 ms. delay. I wish more manufactures put hidden features in thier products, you feel so cool when you crack the code!

Speaking of Roland SDE 1000's, I have two of them, one of which is my main guitar delay (guitar > delay > amp). Anyone know of any fixes for the drop in signal that the SDE 1000 creates? I love the sound of the delay, but the level drop is killing me.

Searching the forum for outboard delay units and found this thread.

Has anything come along in the last 4 years or so that could be considered "Hall of Fame"?

My favorite is the Boss RE-1000

Bet you never heard of this one
You can't change the delay times other than the presets though.
But it has a warmth knob (slow modulation) and a tone/sound that's amazing.
Like the Roland RE-3 but with extra multi echo programs (which are great for modulated reverb sounds)
Sometimes I wonder if there's also a compressor in the delay algorhythm, it sometimes sounds like it.
