I cannot imagine that an ultra-clean DI signal going into a lifeless digital amp sim going into a static cabinet impulse response will lead to a nice guitar tone.
I'd go the other way 'round and inject as much color on the way in as I can.
I thought we were talking about re-amping real guitars amps later in the process.

And guitar software (see your quote below).
For reamping I agree that a cleanest signal possible could be what to reach for.

Avoid traditional DI & mic-amps when it comes to re-amping or guitar software.(..)

Point taken..

I still find it a little unnecessary to use mic pre-amp to convert a hi-z signal into a line signal:

Hi-z > DI > Mic pre-amp > line out > interface

When all that's needed really is:

Hi-z > Line-amp > line out > interface

But you're right, a Mic pre with a nice transformer HI-z input - or a Tube DI like the one from A-Designs might bring something nice to a digital amp sim.

But I would be carefully not to drive the signal too hot as tube and transformer distortion might affect some software hi-gain in a bad way.

Cheers,
Peter

I just need the preamp, because my DI box (passive) has a mic-level output that I need to bring to line-level.

Thread Starter
In conclusion

I can't record a guitar plug in guitar amp
Guitar- guitar amp-Mic-pre amp- interface

I have two ways

Guitar-guitar amp sim- interface
Or guitar-Di directly on Mic pre amp-interface
Or guitar - di passive - interface

I see Di tube like a designs but I need a pre amp after or I go out directly to my interface
Guitar-Di tube- pre amp-interface
And the amp sim like the ax fx 20 when I place it?
Thks

Guitar > axe fx > interface

OR

guitar > DI > output > axe fx > interface
Plus ------ > parallel output DI signal > interface (to try other tones with amp sim plugin)
