| give up.. but with dignity
1) its possible to adapt your playing to the great headroom your been given, and 2) failing that, get a 64 deluxe. 3) Experiment with speakers. 4) Think about transformers - and don' forget about trying to get sag from the rectifier. You can get tubes that sag more/quicker, and from ted weber you can get a custom rectifier that will sag wherever you want it to sag. I owned that amp, tried removing two tubes and it still was loud as hell. I have often wondered if a couple of vintage transformers ( like from pre 63 showman - power and output) would tame that puppy. Ok Ok - Just sell the thang to a pedal steel player and get a 63 super or 60 bassman. There is no gig you can't play with a 30 watt amp. I saw Junior Brown with two silver twins on 10, in a small venue, and he made it sound so good I only needed my light-duty ear plugs. |

Depends. Saying "Twin Reverb" is like saying "Stratocaster". Which one? The old blackface has a nice grumble/rumble with a bit of sparkle depending on the state of things inside. The silverfaces with the superlinear transformer will start to break up at some point, but if you ever turn it up enough to get there, you're gonna already be deaf so it won't matter. The silverface, IIRC, sounds better when you get the amp section overdriving. Just stand waaaay the fokk back. | |

a friend of mine's got a silverface twin that's been "marshalled out". why anyone wanted MORE volume out of a twin is beyond me, but it's clean clean clean for days. the problem is that it sounds anemic at anything under 6 or 7 and, if you get it up to that volume level, you can't be in the same timezone with it. i concur with rufus--get a Champ. not quite the same tone as a twin, but it's close. and with some high-headroom tubes, you'll get a very similar glassy clean. it'll still be loud, though.....but not as loud as a twin on 2! i put a weber alnico in my champ and it's massive sounding now. that man's got a touch for speakers. cheers, wade |
