Thread Starter | buying second hand microphone valves/tubes...
buying second hand tubes that were used on amps etc to put into a high quality mic, is that a high risk of getting a poor quality tube. like will an amp kill and damage a tube alot more than say a mic would. is there a general rule of what to look for when buying second hand tube? do you have to be strict on chosing tubes used for mics more than chosing tubes used for other equipment.

If the tubes you need aren't super rare and expensive, the best thing is to buy as many as you can and choose the best one. A tech can give you a diagnosis about which tube has the best performance "on the bench", and listening tests has to be done to check that the tube isn't microphonic. I'd rather buy NOS tubes than used tubes. In general Telefunken, Mullard and Phillips are good. |
