Does Avid Omni require HDX?

Do you have to have an HDX card to connect Omni? So really, the cheapest way to get into HD is $5k for the Omni HDX bundle?

It appears that yes to configure it but once configured perhaps you dont need the card

Here is a brief thread about this from the DUC
Avid Omni standalone - Avid Audio Forums

To use OMNI as a interface for Pro Tools it must always be connected to a PCI card. HDX , HDN , TDM , doesn't matter but it absolutely needs one of those cards to work as a PT interface. It has some stand alone features but none of them are interface features just standalone mixer features.

OMNI NEEDS TO BE CONNECTED TO A CARD
as do all Digidesign , Avid interfaces for TDM or later.

You might be right as for full interface features but as for "none" apparently the converter can also be used stand alone . ?
I personally haven't tried it so cant say yes or no, thats why I linked the DUC thread. Because this post of the the thread I linked seems to indicate the converters could be used
Although it does state "when PT is not running " which may mean for some reason it would have to be some other DAW. So in practical terms you may be correct.

From the Omni manual:
When you configure the Mixer settings in
the Hardware Setup, the Mixer settings are
stored on HD OMNI. This lets you use HD
OMNI as a pre-configured standalone converter
when Pro Tools is not running.

Looks like you could have someone with an HD system configure it for you (make sure you pan the SPDIF input hard right and left) then you could take it home, use the SPDIF input on the Omni and the monitor outs to your monitors and see what the converters sound like.

You can configure the mixer to have it act like a standalone converter, it will retain the settings even when powered off or disconnected.

But you can't have it do A/D and D/A at the same time. Using the ALT button, you can switch back and forth. It's fine if you're gonna leave it one way or the other, but a pain if you need to switch back and forth. A very clunky workaround.

So for most practical purposes, you need some kind of HD card.

The good news is that you can get a PCIe to Thunderbolt chassis and use your HD card with laptops, Imacs, Mac Mini's, etc.

Right. My post was made before the Thunderbolt version was available and before anyone knew about it.
