Peluso P12

I know that these are not shipping yet. But, I wondered if anyone has heard or tested these for Peluso pre-production?

And the Telefunkin M16. According to Dan Richards the 460 and M16 are also identical except cosmetics and tube brands. The P12 does have a custom Cinemag transformer, though. There'sa guy in Vancouver upgrading the 460 too!
It's a great time to be buying mics.

I haVe a 22 251, and love it!

I never was much of a fan of the C12-VR. BIG fan of Peluso's mics though. I'm anxious to hear his C-12.

I don't know about the 'Apex 460' series mic beating a C12VR... actually I know they don't generally. Even the plastic AKG capsule is generally more balanced sounding than the typical Chinese capsules, and the grille is quite thick and that contributes considerably to the spitty sound of these mics, especially if you're adding EQ. Now the other question is what capsule he puts in his mic. He has a lot of different capsules available.

No, this mic has nothing to do with any Apex/ Telefunken mics, or any of the OEM'ed chinese mics.

It's made in the USA! Peluso makes their own capsules... it uses Cinemag transformers, 6072 tube and I can't wait to get one!

NO RELATION WHATSOEVER!

I may on occasion talk about some of the products I am a dealer for in my posts.. and that's OK! I sell them because I like them. Not vice versa. It's more fun to talk about things you know and love, then things you don't.

I for one, as well, think this mic has nothing to do with an Apex 460. The Peluso looks way longer and seems more narrow in diameter. Besides, the web site clearly states it is hand made in the USA.

I'm not saying that it's not made in the USA, I'm just saying that it kinda reminds me of the apex, looks wise at least. To me, it doesn't look any longer or more narrow, but that's just me.

The Apex, the Peluso and the original C12 are all within a couple mm of each other in size/shape.

I think the Peluso is much classier looking with the chrome top, etc. But, the Peluso shouldn't be compared to the Apex.... it's a totally different league of microphone.

Are you sure about that? I don't doubt that they are probably assembled in the USA, but im pretty sure the capsule metalwork is done in China. Not that it matters as long as the final assembly and QC is up to par, which from my brief experience with peluso stuff... it certianly is.

The capsules are made by Peluso Microphone Lab. They buy only the metal work from China and then the sputtering and diaphragm work is done by them, at their lab in the U.S.

John Peluso makes his capsules in America, but buys the 'non audio' stuff, i.e. bodies from China. I think his stuff looks very clean, but it's too bad this industry is often superficial...buying many times with the eyes not the ears. Just because something looks similar to something else has no relation to the sound. There is a thread in the moan zone about CharterOak and a strictly Chinese made mic company regarding a very similar issue (although the CharterOak does use Chinese capsules, but are QC'd heavily). As a direct example, the Peluso capsules are good enough for other manufacturers such as Pearlman (which in itself is a respected microphone) to buy from Peluso. When it's an American capsule, American or European tube, and American transformer and very strict quality control, I'd expect a quality piece. But I think the most important thing is having the right person doing final assembly and QC more than where the parts are made. Having the metal work done in China is where the savings comes in on any microphone, and for more than one manufacturer. American or European metal work prices are murder and seem to contribute much to the end user price.

Actually, that's not true... They don't have the microphone bodies made in China. He custom machines them himself.

If that's true, then I must have misunderstood what John said when I talked to him on the phone in the last few days. I assumed that he wouldn't have time to pour molten stainless steel into molds.
Not that it matters one way or the other, I'm not listening to the metal casing of the body. Or am I Tony?

Just because two microphones are not in the same league doesn't mean that someone can't think that they look alike. In fact, no where in this thread does anyone say that the P12 is the same as an Apex. Someone mearly stated that they looked alike. Does that mean that they are, no, but they do have a similar resemblance and you can't deny that.

That's true, but show me where in this thread someone said that "the Pelso P12 sounds like an Apex 460." No one is questioning how it sounds. It was just simply stated it "looked" like an Apex, that's all.

The P12 is a very close reproduction of the original AKG C12 (not the new VR version). They will begin shipping this Monday and you can order starting today on our website. For those of you in the vicinity of Cleveland who would like to see it in person, we should have one here in our demo room within a week or two.

It's on the Peluso section of the Atlas Pro Audio site now....John Peluso just upgraded all the pictures of all his mics with very nice professional shots. Even though the P12 isn't slated to ship until early next week, we can always accomodate pre-orders. Thanks!!

Well, I guess that means I have to throw out the obligatory "buy from me", since every other dealer has.
