I don't see any difference between the plates in the two pictures you linked. They look the same to me, and both of those are just like the plates on mine.

Quite possibly I am mistaken, then. It wouldn't be the first time!

I still wish he engraved it, though!

Never listen to opinions regarding gear. For every 50 nobodies on Gearslutz that say a piece of gear doesn't sound good enough to cut it, I know at least one somebody who is cutting it in NYC with that piece of gear.

Dan Kennedy, if you happen to waddle through this thread - please don't change a thing!!!

Funny thing: I used to think that blue-green-turquoise color of the old Neve stuff was horrendous, then I bought a couple of them and now it's quite possibly one of my favorite colors

not a fair comparison at all!

You have carefully "decorated" your Great Rivers with beautiful swatches of azure blue tape adorned with mystical arabic numerals, in delicate black hand-calligraphy. Of course they look good! Had you not had the design sense to carefully place these swatches asymmetrically favoring the left side, like moss on the trees of the forest, you might just have another rack of Great Rivers.

It's all about how you describe it, right? Ever read "confessions of an opium eater"? The entire book could be summed up in "I got high", but he chooses to elaborate and enhances the experience.

I think the Pacifica is very ugly, the red and white is a turn off, red feels like I am at a ***** house. BUT whats in the box sounds so sweet.
Use ears not eyes.

My Harrison MR3 is not that great looking, not ugly either, it's like the eq in it, very neutral.

the gear could be bright pink with purple dots and green stars all over it, as long as it sounds good.. i will display it in my rack with pride...

I don't think so much now about how gear looks as I used to. I think the Great River stuff is very plain and that yellow Mercenary Edition logo is shocking. I know those machines are quality inside but that on/off switch looks the same as some real cheapo switches.

I like the rack gear to be basic but elegant. All that takes is a good choice of decent quality knobs, colours and sensible arrangement. A good company logo helps. That's all that's needed.

However, when it comes to instruments that you play, looks become a bit more important than the stuff in the racks. There are certain guitars that would put me off playing them they are that ugly even if they actually sound good. Parker Fly?

^ of course, your avatar is a debian insignia, so let's be honest... you probably wouldn't be the first one to care about how something looks...

Dont get me wrong, I can appreciate a good looking piece of gear, but an ugly ass preamp that looks like it came out of an old russian submarine really does it for me.
I love the JDK Audio pres and comps, firstly because of the sound, or lack there of (nice and transparent), but I also love the simple, submarine apparatus look of it too...

JDK Audio

The Groove Tubes Supre was also sexy looking, though I believe very short-lived.
