D'Angelo Keyboard sounds and ffx

After comparing my real rhodes 88 suitcase to the keyboard imitations, i'm inclined to try and find a real B3 and wurly. (anyone knowing the wherabouts of sales let me know).

The point of this thread is to find out what D'angelo is playing on Brown sugar and the like on his first album, and what the ffx are that he is using to achieve his sound??

yeah, that's a pretty freaky keyboard sound on Brown Sugar.....i always thought it sounded like a cross between a B3 and a wah-wah'ed rhodes.....maybe it's just a wah-wah'ed B3.

It's definately B3 ish

I figured one of the engineers on here might know

(Or at least the guess work might lead to some cool new sounds)

That is an incredible song. I still use it as an A/B track.

Explore Voce Spin (with a control 24, Hui, pro control to tweak the plug in) even though I don't think that's what they used. There's a mod to the Rhodes suitcase (which I forget the name of- can anyone help me out here?) that's basically a shield of grounded copper on the inside of the 'hood' on the keyboard that makes it VERY clean. It almost sounds like they used that into stereo AC30's, but not quite.

Bob Power, man, Bob Power.

www.b3world.com

if you're seriously looking, go hang out in the warehouse for a day and play all of their stock. Something will click for you.

the vodoo album was fantastic.period.tracks done in one takes and all..
nice touch of loops and weird samples, big bass..the song prince forgot to write..backward guitars.just amazing

too bad he thinks he is a disiple of marvin gaye(weird swedish interview he gave in 2001)

looks like "brown sugar" has got into his veins....(from recent reports of his status)

I'm almost certain that its a wurlitzer with a wah effect

Not on the song Brown Sugar, but the album, like Jonz in my Bonez, and Voodoo too

Ah yes, one of my fave D'Angelo track

That "Hammond" sound sounds like it has quite alot of tasty spring reverb going on it... I reckon there's a resonant filter on there too, just like on the Wurly

That fast leslie sound is classic porn!

I agree re the wurly --- sounds filtered to me, with the attack shaved off.

And that filtered bass is so deeeep

There's also some gtr chords in there.

The whole thing is so understated... Love it!

PS this is all guesswork... Russell Elevado said this is a "no go" area, so you probably won't find out for sure..

I've been sitting here experimenting and I got something so close that I don't think it's a mystery to me anymore. I think the only reason it doesn't sound exactly the same is because I'm using software to replicate the sound. But it does sound extremely close to the original. Not trying to brag or anything, but I'm certain that I've figured out the Jonz in My Bonz sound.

Bravo! How did you approach it? I love the filtered wurly in the intro....

Actually I think its a digital version of the wurly, because you can hear a little vibrato like he's using a control wheel/joystick.

The filter could well be something on the ASR10... I have the ASRX and you can get some pretty fierce filtered/overdriven "cocked wah" tones especially if you use piano-like instruments. Plus that intro sounds looped tome, so he may well have sampled and processed it in the ASR10

Damn that "jazz" kick in Jonz is amazing... The beat swings like a mofo: The 2nd snare is so late
