For those of you who own/use the 160SL which program mode do you use most and why?
One mode (160 type) has manual and separate auto function. The other mode (165 type ?) the attack/release still affects the auto program. I have never tried the 2nd mode. Can't change on the fly during a session because the dip switches are inside. Thoughts, comments please.

I have mine set with the newer AutoVelocity switch on, which is how it ships from the factory, I believe.

Somehow a bit more musical and less "grabby" than the "original" setting. Which is weird, because to my ears, it behaves more like a 160VU with the AutoVelocity on, in that I can compress kick or bass harder without losing all the low end, it just tightens things up really nicely.

I'd be interested to know how other people use it, too!

I find the 160SL so usefull as an everyday trackng workhorse, drum buss. 2-buss and mixing comp that I had to obtain a 2nd one. Since I couldn't really decide which was better or more usefull, one has the switch enabled and the other doesn't.

I´m interested in this question too.

Anyone else has experimented with this settings?

More opinions on this are greatly appreciated!

Mine had it on since purchase.

I just turned it off and prefer it off. It seemed to fight things when set to autovelocity- which is exactly the opposite of that settings intent.

If you didn't hit it hard, it sounded great- but the minute it started working a bit- it sounded bad to my ears.

That was what motivated me to open it and see (as I bought it 2nd hand).

Its a fussy comp, in general, but I paid 1300 bucks and its worth every penny!

I still absolutely LOVE the limiter- brick walls brilliantly.

I use mine with the fixed values for auto mode, never did much testing between the modes though. I love the dbx a lot, once it is set right it really does wonderful things. More important than the internal switches is IMHO to have an EQ in the sidechain, I hardpatched an Aphex 109 EQ in there to take out some dBs in the bass region of the sidechain. And yes, I also don't know why there are not more people using the 160sl's limiter instead of brick wall plugins. When the mix needs to be loud, the dbx can handle the first 6dB of GR and the plugin only has to do 1-2dB instead of 7-9dB. Simply sounds better. The 160sl is worth the low used price for it's limiter alone...

I leave one 160SL with switch in for use mostly in any buss work and the other 160SL with switch out non for mostly non buss work.
