BEST 500 series compressor! VOTE...choose or loose:)

What's THE best lunchbox compressor and why...not just what you own.

And to add fuel to the fire, any of these kick their rackmount counterparts outta bed? And why?

Let's hear it.

I think Buzz has one or is coming out with one and I'd love to know if there are others than the API...hence the post.

OSA has said they're working on one and shown a photo, and supposedly Purple is working on one too.

But right now API is it, AFAIK.

The 525 is a one trick pony that does not work well on many sources but it rules when it works. Lots of dough for a not very versitile unit though.

No one is ever going to say waht they bought isn't the best. You're always going to end up with people pushing what they own. It just human nature.

I think the only two out there are the API 525 and a discontinued Aphex model that is pretty rare. So voting isn't going to mean anything since virtually everyone who has a 500 series compressor has an API and has never used anything else in a lunchbox. That said, I have a 525 and it's a very nice compressor on some things.

This is so true... After reading some posts on this board, I have realized just how much people over-value what they own. I call it the "I bought it... so it must be good" syndrome.

EDIT: I'm just speaking in general, not about anyone or anything in this particular thread!

I may on occasion talk about some of the products I am a dealer for in my posts.. and that's OK! I sell them because I like them. Not vice versa. It's more fun to talk about things you know and love, then things you don't.

I bought a 525 because I like to track vocals with 'em. But I like to buy in pairs, so I bought two. So far I haven't used 'em both at the same time except to beef up tracks with the threshold at zero, which is a great sound.

My standard line is that I don't recommend them as someone's only outboard compressor unless it's only for vocals, and maybe acoustic guitar. And as good as they may be on acoustic, I've been tracking without compression on acoustics lately.

(How was that? )

They're cool lookin' little buggers, though, what with those tiny meters and all.

Maybe soon they're gonna turn into a Purple 77
