Stil at it

Chaps

the 47 still hasn't materialised, i have committed to buy , but no sign as of yet,
I missed the eqp1a by a day, i go the money but it was sold the day before,
I did get the MEq5 and along with that and the fairchild i did my first guitar session on them yesterday,
lovely, though i did have to use the desk pre , which are still nice, but not quite the vintage i want, but worked well,
the pultec is nothing like the waves plug in i tried, it fattens the sound, and then does a lovely job of nudging the tone about. player was please i was pleased, and when we a/b ed the tracks with same guy tracks done on a SSL no contest, we had body and depth,

Spotted a pair of V72 s, fingers crossed.

Federal

HI chaps

I added a 40 s Federal compressor to this rack, and used it to wreck some drums,
please a 87 on its side over the kit in figure 8, thru a 1073 and then the federal, cranked it up to get it crunchy, and away we go, didnt really want to add an eq , so moved the mic a few times to get balance and tones, and my client was very happy.

later in the day we swapped out to a Focusrite 828 pre and a API 560 eq and the federal, a 414 buls and did some really nice horns, by this time of the day i had worked out how the current control works on the federal and got it much cleaner then for the drums, though
we did some reggae horns, where things got stinky again with the tone.

all in all a great Day and a very good purchase.

it needs some service and a lot of degaussing,
but might be fun methinks
Those Brennells look very similar to the Ferrograph units from the same era. I suspect it will sound excellent.

you obviously don't have a budget problem... if it were me, i'd definitely add Neve 1084, or if you dont want the EQ, 1272 and API 312. have all these and a pair of V72s (very nice pres but i use the others alot more).

GOt it

Thanks mate.

I have all the Neve im going to need for now. id like to buy v76 s but im told reliably that the top end is not as open as on a v 72, which dosnt have as much gain, but then with a condenser..... for a ribbon i could perhaps cascade pres,

but i think im set on a pair of V72 s ideally the S model

The V76s I have heard have sounded more open on top than a V72 but im sure all of them sound pretty different at this point anyway. It sounds like you are pretty set on getting the "big names" when it comes to vintage gear but just remember all this stuff comes with a super inflated price tag. In my experience there are at least a handful of tube broadcast preamps that sound as good if not better than V72s and cost a quarter to half of the price. Also ive never heard a 660 but I cant imagine it being any more useful than a BA6a (or sounding better for that matter)

COol

Thats the great value of this forum, the Varying views people have.

I agree old gear will sound different to identical Old gear,

Ba 6 is a great bit of Kit, but is not a 660, the fairchild does more than compress, it uses slight of hand to mend bad mic tech, it adds density to signal its truly amazing, pop round and play with my 660 for a couple of hours and see for yourself, you can side by side it with a BA 6 and a lot of other cool gear

its not about the names, its about the sound, its does carry a price tag, but then so what? one can sell them on if you get tired of them, but in reality its a great privilege for me , to be able to work with these items on a daily basis.
CLients enjoy it to, and they count.

Brennell

SO the moters and what not where a bit of a bother on the tape recorder so i had the pre amps chopped out and mounted into a nice rack, so now i have a nice mid 60s valve pre amp , with a ton of gain and a lovely thick sound,

pair of V76 s on the horizon, keep your fingers crossed.

if budget is not an issue, id get a pair of V76S, those were the only ones built for the recording industry.

if you go the V72 route, get the early telefunken ones. i dig em over the later siemens
