Mic Suggestion

I have a BLUE Kiwi, Peluso 2247LE, Peluso P12, and tons of dynamic mics. What would be a good LDC compliment for acoustic guitar and vocals (male)? I've been looking at a few things, but I dont want to taint the suggestion pool. Just hoping to hear a few options that I've not yet considered. I'd like to stay around $2k, but if there's something that would really step me up a notch, I'm open to spending a little more.

By the way, pres arent an issue:
GR MP2NV
API 3124+
BAE 1073
ADL600
UA4110
and 64 channels of Lynx Aurora I/O

Thanks guys.

Hi,
I also have a kiwi and a 2247. I used to have the P12 but it wasn't my cup of tea...

I bought a used U87ai for $2000. Very happy with it. It was a major improvement on vocals. I have a thread I started in high end where I posted 2 clips to demonstrate the a-designs mp-2a. One take with the kiwi on vocals and the other with the U87... look it up.

+1 on the U87. Also, if you can afford it, pick up a Neumann TLM102 for acoustic guitar. Great for backing vocals too!

Demo a Telefunken AR-51. It's in your price range and is an excellent all-around mic. We've used it on piano, acoustic guitar, and jazz vocals.

You have all present/airy sounding LDCs. I'd look at getting a ribbon. AEA R84 will be the most different than what you have (overall its mellowing to the source), the Royer 121 has a more 'hi-fi' type of ribbon sound (less round in the lows overall and more forward than the R84), the AEA R92 is kind of inbetween the two (less mellow sounding than an R84). Then you can combine the ribbon and LDC (even placing them right next to each other as one of many placement choices) and balance them to your taste during mix.

If an LDC is essential, then on the less expensive side look at the Peluso 2247 (the standard version not the LE version that you have) or a BLUE Cactus (there might be a used one in your budget), both are more mellow and complementary to what you have.

Just did a singer/songwriter demo session last night for the local university class I teach, and we used a wide variety of mics and pres on both vocals and his Taylor. As usual, my UMT70s's shined big time. Using a pair in figure 8 with the nulls strategically placed gave me absolutely amazing separation, plus a fantastic sound on both the instrument and the voice. If I had to give up all my mics, the Gefells would be the last to go.

well, i bought a U87 today in matte black, very pretty. primarily because i got a great deal on it, and that it seems i should have one around. im thinking this fills in the middle quite well as an all-rounder, with the P12 handling the top and the 2247LE handling the bottom, if that makes sense.

so now im thinking maybe slowly replacing the other two with higher quality mics: maybe a bock 241 and get rid of the P12 and perhaps find a better U47 vibe mic.

any opinions on Peluso P12 vs Bock 241?

ok, so i went a little nuts: i bought a FLEA 47, a Manley Reference Cardioid, and then the U87ai mentioned above. quite a bad month for the bank account, but an incredible month for the studio, lol. i dont really have much opportunity to audition mics, so i have to just close my eyes and jump -- these were good leaps for sure. anyone have an opinion on a Bock 241 vs the Manley Reference Cardioid?

I guess you're pretty much done with mics..
...for now !

I think that getting a good ribbon might be a good suggestion.. try them out but a good starting point are: coles 4038, AEA 44 (or R84), royer 121 and/or 122..

If you'll ever need any more LDC's check out the Josephson 715 and possibly the Brauner Phantera or a Violet Design Globe (<<<fwiw I wrote a review in the gs review section, below my avatar there's the link).

If you'll ever need sdc's: Josephson e22 and/or Gefell M300
I also suggest to check out a Milab DC-96B which is not an sdc but could act as one and it's spectacular on ac gtrs and also on vocals..

Just my 0.02$,

From the concensus of most of the posts on this topic, had you went the next step or two, you probably would have eventually ended up getting what you've got. I never would have suggested to go 'all the way' like you did...but that is a true Gearslut. Congratulations, enjoy the mics, and let us know how that Flea 47 is working out for you.

That's what I was afraid of. Now I'm really pushing on jealousy. The interim stuff seemed tolerable, but now I've got to find a way... Great acquisitions!

Wow! Some nice purcahses there.
Can you describe the Manley as compared to the U87?

My next buy will be a new mic but I can't afford to take the approach you did!

very different. the 87 is very mid forward and has what, to me, is a rubbery response -- for lack of a better way to describe it. . . tight and punchy low mid sort of thing.

the Manley is closest to my Peluso P12: very bright top, very crisp and modern. i prefer the Manley to the P12, but they both have the same general tone with the Manley doing everything in a cleaner, smoother, more 3D sort of way. the P12 is a little grittier (not necessarily in a bad way), seems to have a little more harmonic content, and is a little warmer on the bottom as a result.

the Manley tends to have the wow factor when you first hear it, whereas the 87 does not at all. but the 87 just works -- it sits in the track easily, takes eq well, and wont sound bad.

the Flea is dark and smooth with the expected vintage color and vibe.

Exactly! The 87 usually sits in a mix very well. I sometimes use the Kiwi but I have to work harder to make it gel in a dense mix. I love it if it's just vocals and guitar...

I'm going to have to rent a bunch of mics and make up my own mind I guess.
