D&R Orion Users Please Help!

Hi D&R Orion users,
Im a happy owner of a 24ch Orion.
The only thing I dislike is the Channel Insert is set Post EQ.

Is this the usual setting to all Orion desks (factory standard) or maybe
a mod done by the pre owner of my board?

In the past I worked with consoles and liked to compress first and eq after
that.

I asked Duco de Rijk (the console designer) and he sent me the schematics
(attached) to change the Insert to Pre EQ with a solder Iron.
Unfortunately I have no idea how to do it...

Do you have experience with this?

Thanks a lot for your help and time.

Peace
Tom

Insert Orion

Hi,
In my opinion it is much better for the insert to be pre-eq, like in my Orion, so listen to D&R and change the way of your insert, no big deal, Orion is very simple
Best regards
Braca

I don't know the orion. But based on the schematics... I'am not shure, if it's that easy. The schematic tells nothing about a simple jumper to change this.
Looks as they are factory wise set to post eq.

Hi Braca,
do you have an Orion or OrionX? You are right, Im thinking the PreEq Insert is more useful for mixing.
Im a little confused about the fact you have Inserts PreEQ and on my
Orion it is PostEQ (by factory)..., maybe different versions?

I mailed with Duco (the console designer) again and it seems to be difficult
to change it on the PCB`s. Nice guy btw.

Unfortunately you are right, SM58!

Thanks for your comments!

More opinions?

Orion insert

My Orion is not X, but there is no sense about insert post eq made by factory. I am not tehnical educated, but there are lot of jumpers in Orion channel. My advice is to find some technicians.
Best regards

The schematic says it is post eq and there is no jumper to change that. To change this, you have to cut at least one chopper on the pcb.
There is a jumper to change the ins. Ret to banlanced but no one to set the ins point pre eq.
Post eq ins is not that unusual.. By the way.

You are right, Sm58.
Its exact the same my tech said when he saw the schematics and the Channelstrip/ PCB.

Strange..., some Orions seem to have the Insert PreEQ, some have it PostEQ???

Anyway! Here is my solution to use my outboard gear PreEq:

- Daw output to MonInput/ console
- insert-y-cable (send) from MonInsert/ console to input/ outboard gear
- output/ outboard gear to LineIn/ console

to use Insert PreEQ:
LineButton in down position; MixButton in up position; TapeButton in down position

to use Insert PostEQ:
LineButton up; MixButton down; TapeButton down
- insert-y-cable from ChanInsert to outboard gear (send and return)

To change between PreInsert/ PostInsert Eq I only have to switch/ patch one cable and press two buttons on my Orion.

What do you think?

Have a nice day
Tom

Not sure if it's easier or quicker than what you describe, but if I want to insert preEQ I just patch from ProTools output to comp and from comp to mon input. It takes the same time than patching into the channel send/return.

Hi Teo,
I had your setup in mind..., but I would need more cables for this...

I re-read your post...
Since you talk about Y-insert cables, does that mean that you don't have the patchbay?
I only have three channels of outboard comps, so I don't need many cables anyway...

One thought...with the method you describe, you'd be mixing through the line inputs (at least in one of the configurations you mentioned). Not that it would make a lot of difference, but you would be going through one more pre-amp stage. It might make a difference, if you do that on a lot of channels...

You are right,
I have an Orion without patchbay.
My 6 "neutrik patchbays" sit in my siderack.

I have all console ChanInserts wired, 8 Aux sends, 8 returns,
my outboard gear ins and outs and the ADDA converter inputs...

Maybe I have to send some stems trough all LineIn and MonIN and rerecord
it from console StereoOut to A/B the signal differences.

I compared it with only one channel and couldnt notice any differences...
(but 24ch??? hmmmm)

Any difference will be EXTREMELY minimal if any. If you need EQ "post insert" I would do as Teo described. No more patching than if you'd gone via insert. 2 patchcables and done.
