Sluttiest Snare Sound You've Gotten?

Ok, we all hear em, love em and hate em on the radio... Those elusive, slutty snare sounds. The one with the big smack, the high pitched one with the big crack, and the upfront dry "studio sounding" Steve Gadd type.

So, the question to you is: What is the absolute sluttiest snare sound you've gotten in your opinion, the one you love the most, and HOW did you get it? With what equipment?? Care to post up a few bars in a clip so us slutz can salivate over your rocket science?

Anyone who posts a clip will get a score on the "sluttness meter" from 1 to 10!

Post any clip from these three different types, or any type you deem the sluttiest!

1) retro, 80's type big fat warm smack type with effects like reverb

2) good old stock up front dry type

3) the more modern "big crack" type with lotsa sluttiness on the room mics type

and of course anything in between!

I know it's out of context, but that is a very nice snare sound...

Wanna give us some more info on room, mics, the snare itself etc?

In my experience...a sweet black beauty can do it all if tuned correctly, new heads, not hit like a p***y, mic'd with a 57, with either a 1073/API/Wunder preamp, API 550 EQ.

any snare I have tried from these guys has been great:

http://www.bradydrums.com.au/

Other times it has been cheap no names.

The bradie's are f'kin loud, like so loud I didn't think it was possible out of an acoustic drum. this can be a good or bad thing. I'd definitely recommend them. They have sound demos and a list of recordings on their website that use their products (many that you will know eg audioslave to coldplay to U2 to weezer, hmmm I only just read this myself, these are pretty much the bands I would have named as having great snare sounds anyway..)

I can't post any samples but the best snare sound I've ever got was: Pearl Master Series MMX. I think this snare is birch-not sure. Mic'ed it upw/a 57/Neotek console pre. The 57 sounded really good on this snare. I guess it's the only reason I keep a 57 around.

The MMX series is maple - the BSX and BRX are the birch ones.

Agreed though, like anything, sometimes a good old 57 just works wonders.

Not so long ago I recorded drums with a vintage Slingerland 'Radio King' as the snare.

That must have been the sluttiest and best sounding snare I've ever recorded. I rented it from a rental company. It also came with a great drummer who could make it sound slutty as well.

Ok here's a short example since you asked (type 3 I suppose). Its the first time I've posted any sound files here..

Not my favourite song, but a good snare sound

I can't remember the actual drum, either an ayotte, premiere or brady..

Recording chain swas no secret. SM57 top and bottom, neve, apogee ->profools -> apogee, then to analog 2 inch 24 track (studer?) -> SSL mix, can't remember which comp.

oh and a good drummer

hmmm, I just listened to the bit I posted and realizd I got the wrong part of the song, theres a really nice fill about 5 sconds later, but you get the idea anyway

I thought I should add that that sample was my band, we had someone else engineering/mixing that session.

No sound clip but it basically involves a great source sound and an 1176 limiter. ..

Uneasy Mind or Sacred Ground. Not sure what kind of snare he used (big and maple or birch I think), but the chain is MD431 into a UA 2108 into a Distressor, multed on a Neotek Elite with one signal through a Manley Massive Passive and the other through a Summit mastering EQ with a little of the Eventide H3000 "Big Snare" patch. Recording in a huge, great sounding room contributes too.

last two Soundgarden albums

The snare drums on the last two soundgarden records are Keplinger snare drums. They are beasts. Brass or steel, usually weighing 25 pounds or more. I got one of my own (14 x 5 3/4) late last year and it sounds amazing. I have to make sure I don't overuse it.

Ayotte made a drum with Keplinger shells with their wood hoops. pretty killer too. Totally different sound from Keppy's own designs.

Spaun Birch 8in deep with a coated ambassador on the top head. I don't know what is being used for the bottom head.

chain:

Top Head: Joesphson e22s => Pendulum MDP-1a pre => EQP-1A => Atomic Squeezebox -MULT- =>send to tape, and another to a Purple MC77 'all-buttons-in' => API 4 band EQ => then to tape.

Bottom Head: e22s => Trident S40 => tape.

Sennheiser Shotgun directly over the snare 6 feet above => 1081 => tape.

4038s as L-R overheads and elam 251's as L-C-R room mics help too.

My favorite rock snare sound ever is the first Audioslave album. WOW. That whole album is a sonic masterpiece.

Here's one that I'm digging. Not from a mix, or even a rough mix. This is just faders up with some panning. No EQ. No Compression. No Reverb. No vocals.

Snare path = Ayotte > sm57 > Martech
OH = m300s > RNP

Oh you slutmeister! Sounds nice! 1 extra slut point for getting it that good without all the extra sluttiness yet to be applied! 8.5 so far on my meter, but would love to hear that after you get more slutness on it!

Here's one I like

Just a few seconds, in context. Yamaha recording custom, zone mics only, Blue Baby bottle in the snare hat zone, and a ksm32 on the symbol zone. Great river pres. L2 in drum submix. Wood Floor & back wall.

Hmmz... I like it, although in this case it sounds to me like the drummer ain't really HITTING that thang! Gotta smack that thing to give the engineer a sound! And play "out" of it, as opposed to "through" it. I dunno, might just be me. Sounds like it could of used a touch more eq'ing and sluttiness, but still bout an 8 on the ole slutmeter! (Just my opinion, but of course, what do I know- ask the big dogs around here what they think!) OMG, I'm a bonified Gear Head now with this post!

Either the Pork Pie Big Black with an control sound, ambassador or emporor x or the Ludwig acrolite with an ambassador. I haven't had much luck with evans heads on snare but I have on other drums. 57 or m201's into a Daking, API, Pacifica or Neve are all different and can all rule. A lot of time bottom snare mics piss me off. I like the snare rattle from room mics and overheads better but it's hard to feature that in the mix since all the other drums are on those mics. I've also had good luck with taping an Audio technica 4051 to the dynamic which I haven't done in some time but need to do again. I also haven't been doing much shell micing in a while. Maybe I'll start liking wood snares again.

Indie,

Nice mix! Those guitars...sounds like Telecasters or Strats. Did you mike them with 57's or e609s?

The snare was cool too!

Pork Pie Big Black Brass...

I could not agree more. I have this snare (being a drummer myself) and I am in love with it. I have played and recorded Black Beauties before and this thing sounds just as lovely.

I also have a 4x14 DW snare that is super cracky if the song calls for it. Between those two snares, I feel pretty good.

Great thread topic by the way.

Indie, you get a 10 on the Slutty-O-Meter for multiple reasons.

First...that is a delicious sounding snare. I have a Slingerland kit from 78 (no original snare though) and I love Slingerland drums. I am glad you posted this.
Second...Radar. Enough said. You can smack a Radar pretty hard and it comes out so alive sounding. Long live Radar systems.

Good work.
