Thanks | Not too late for this session yet (official start is Wednesday) or the Lordi project in September/October. Drop me an email or PM. The term "Intern" might be a bit misleading, because this is not free but we still make you work. The good news: no toilet cleaning or coffee making involved |

We will do gear shootouts (mics, pre-amps etc.) but mainly to learn how to listen to the little, but important differences. Check it out on my website, there is a bunch of information. | That's what I thought too after reading your homepage. I'll put your workshop on my 2013-slutt-plan
I think electronic music can still learn a lot from the "classic" music genres in terms of mixing, etc.

Second round of pictures.
We changed some of the mics, pre-amps and comps as follows (changes in red):
RIDE JZ BT301 > Great River NP2NV L
HAT MIKTEK C5 Great River MP2NV R
ROOM MONO BIG MICROPHONES Big-ER Chandler LTD-1/LOPASS FILTER> Chandler TG-1 comp LISTEN MIC SM58 SSL LISTEN CHANNEL = cancelled EXTRA ROOM MIC SONY ECM 670 > VAC RAC Mic Pre > BOILER COMP L > BOILER COMP R
You can see the extra ECM 670 right next to the long shotgun above the kit. This one is squeeeeezed, sounds awesome.
Enjoy.

Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using Gearslutz App | I am very much into the Evans heads lately. On this kit and for this session we are using the Evans EC2 on the toms top and Black Dot Remos on the bottom. The Black Dots are not really resonant heads, but they give you a bit thicker and heavier tone and also dampen the ringing. On the snare we are using the Remo coated Emperor and the kick still has the Aquarian, which is probably 12 years old. There are other snares with thicker heads (one has a marching snare head), which will be used for slower songs.

Really appreciate your willingness to share
Is that a superkick 1 or 2 on the kick?

One of my favorite drummers and best friends has an endorsement with Evans.
He swears by them, and they sure sound AMAZING on our recordings ( Ayotte kits).
Great stuff, Michael!

The Boiler is pretty extreme on it's own but when you use both channels it makes it sound like little explosions. I'll see if I can post a short sample.

Update:
We've done 5 songs complete so far, ready to mix. Not much new technical stuff to report. We ended up using the ELUX 251 on Andy's vocals. The CS-1 and the BIG-er where high up there in the race, but in this case the 251 worked better on his voice. Paul the bass player is singing most of the Harmonies and we are using a Beyer MC740 on his voice. Both vocal mics are going through the LaChapell 583e mic pres > Distressor E8 > BURL B2 > Nuendo.
The Gang vocals are taken care of by Fritz the head, everybody groups around him and changes position as the tracking goes on. Fritz is going through the AWS900 mic pres and the SSL Bus compressor >Euphonix AM713 converters > Nuendo
Today we are recording acoustic guitar and clean electric for the ballad, pictures coming tomorrow.

In the patchbay picture I noticed the SCA rack was filled and lit up; is it being put to use? And what preamps do you have in there?

Yes , they are used on every tracking session. The A12s normally for drums, the N72s for drums and vocals, and the J99 for Hat or ride cymbal.

What manufacturer/model are those cabs?
And are they with stock speakers or have any of them been changed?
Thanks!

That's seriously helpful.
So what cab/mix combinations did you tend to for this album? Are they similar to what you usually use? Other than the Royer!

Sent from my GT-I9100 using Gearslutz App | Different for each song or even almost for each track. We find the right sound for the first track on the song then the other guitar player plays his part with another guitar/amp/cab combination. That said the Splawn with the Avatar cab and the 25W greenbacks seems to see an awful lot of use on this one

Great thread, thanks for doing this.
No mention of bass yet, it would be interesting to know what set up you are using.

The bass will be sent through a IK-Multimedia SVT plugin, great sounding plug and it allows me to place it into the mix very easily. We used my Spector Legend and for the de-tuned songs my Rickenbacker.
