happey memorial day!!!!! what would be a pre amp for a warm, smooth vocal sound with presence and CLARITY. For pop and r&b music. Please give me a 2channel if possible and a tube mic pre and a solid state mic pre option that gives similar characteristics. Maybe vintech x81 and a avalon 737sp both through a u87 and or a Rode ntk thanks guys

well im a big Luther fan, and happen to love his vocals (and sad to see him gone). it doesnt get any better.

His most current vocal chain was was a Sony C800 (his own) into a Focusrite Red.

I quite like using the Rode K2 into my Focusrite ISA for nice airy vocals which sounds quite smooth for its price.

But the majic was all in Luthers voice.

Of some that I've owned, for tube designs I liked A-Designs MP-2 or Pendulum for their pretty midrange, and for SS the Focusrite ISA 428 or Speck MP5 for general clean/smooth tone.

I owned Vintech x73i quite a while, and would not classify it as warm/smooth/clear. More like strong and textured. Still can be a nice sound though.

All of those have transformers on input, output, or both, which offers some "blending" of tones, but always softens and dulls the sound a little. The Speck does actually offer switchable xfmr or active paths, a nice touch.

For overall sheer beauty, power, clarity, and presence... Gordon Instruments. Ultimate three dimensional realism, will bring out exactly what any mic is giving it, like the performer is right in the room.

The Forssell CS-1 does a great job at this. No tube (jfet), no output transformer (though it can be fitted with one), unbelievably smooth and transparent compressor and EQ. Gorgeous top end and plenty of girth in the mids and low end. I've owned one for 4 years. It's very neutral, but is one of those *magic boxes* that enhances any signal that passes through it. I wish I had a 16 space rack full of these. It handles anything I throw at it beautifully.
