8-channels of high-quality D/A conversion from W7 PC

I'm after some advice on multi-channel DAC - as a music listener not a studio person. You see I need 8-channels of D/A conversion to be fed from a Windows 7 PC. The analogue output goes into a set of 3-way active speakers with subwoofers. All this has led me into the world of gearslutz and I've got a few questions for the more experienced.

My assumption is that I'd get a Prism Orpheus as it seems to tick all the boxes - Windows 7 / quality D/A conversion. A fair amount of time has passed, however, and I'm wondering if this is still the best solution or if it's been surpassed in terms of D/A by other interfaces? Also, with no interest in A/D, I'm wondering if there are options that don't see me paying for unused functions? A final question is about the merit of soundcards (e.g. RME HDSPe AES) to external DAC versus single "audio interface"?

I've always preferred separates.

But another answer that might work for you would be one of the converter sets with firewire daughter cards. Mytek and Lynx come to mind.

A less costly way might be to buy an older 8x96k converter set. The Mytek, for example, come as DAC or ADC, so you could buy just what you needed, and as they are older, probably get them at a good price. Then you'd still need something like an RME AIO, Babyface, RayDAT or some similar product from another vendor.
