Thread Starter | Studios in Berlin
Hello,
My friends band have asked me to ask around to get advice on Studios on Berlin. Ideally with accommodation. in which to record their next album.
The kind of studios they normally record in have Neve / API / Vintage gear with high quality analogue outboard.. IE. Plate reverbs and Pultec EQs etc.
Does anyone have any suggestions of anywhere that they can propose to their producer / label ?
Thanks

| BallsaalStudios | Music Studio in Berlin.
I have unfortunately never recorded there.
Berlin is in the north of Germany.
I live in the south, nearer to the warm sun... grin.
But all the productions of there I heard, are a really brilliant sound.

I wouldn't go to Funkhaus. Worked there for years.
I'd recommend Tritonus (huge ADT desk in Studio1, SSL4k in Studio 2, lots of outboard, tape, Protools, astonishing Mic collection, incredibly nice and knowledgeable crew.
No Website, but only a call away: TRITONUS TONSTUDIO GMBH in BERLIN Kreuzberg
On a bit more affordable level Basement Studio. In Mitte, SSL AWS 900, vintage outboard, very nice Mic selection, nice&good guys.
Pics still show the old desk. recording_studio_basement_Berlin_Mitte |

R. | Ballsaal is Peter 'Black Pete' Schmidt's private mix room. He's very good, but it's not a tracking studio.
He's in the same building as Teldex Studios though, probably the finest big studio for classical music in Berlin. With SSL9k, Studer desk, huge live room, Fairchild yadayada..

You talk about the Funkhaus as if it is one studio but there are a very large number of individually owned studios at the Funkhaus with a wide variety of setups, respective costs and quality of output.
They vary from semi professional studios run by enthusiasts through to very high end studios with some extraordinary recording spaces run by very experienced professional engineers with years of experience.
As part of a dBs Music Berlin event, I recently had the pleasure of going on a tour of the Funkhaus with some colleagues of ours, Phil Harding and George Shilling. Their joint experience of recording and producing goes back over 25 years and they have worked with some of the worlds most famous artists in the UK.
They were blown away by some of the facilities that the Funkhaus had to offer and in one particular case compared one of the spaces very favourably with a fairly well known studio in the UK........Abbey Road!
In case you're wondering, our only connection to the Funkhaus is that dBs Music will be based there from early 2013. We don't have any history or prior connection to the building or it's occupants.

it's one thing to walk around the studios.
to actually make a record there is a very different experience.
big rooms aren't always good sounding rooms.
saal 4 was an awesome studio but alas, they had to move.

Hansa is indeed still around. Ive done a couple of records there over the last couple of years. it no longer has the massive ballroom ( well it does but its a separate hire). The studios good though, dryish 70s sounding room, lots of space, the SSL is a little creaky but so are most desks! I'd recommend the place. Some of the assistants are great and some awful, contact me for recommendations!
If anyone can recommend a programming studio in Berlin with a bunch of synths and a vocal booth I'd be much obliged.
Tom
