If you go the lunchbox route, there's the HZ51, which give you options for 4 passive or active DI's. I tend to use the Jensen or Cinemag passive into an MA5 for bass but the fet DI is also nice. The MW1 is the go to for guitars but I usually like a bit more character for bass.
has anyone here tried an A Designs REDDI into a Great River?
Yes and its really good combo. It loosens up the tightness of the GR a little with its tubey low end and makes it more "amp" like. My Reddi is on the fritz right now (tube microphonic?) so I've been using a kern 777 into the the Great River but its hard to beat the Reddi/GR combo.
so how many people here actually listened to the excellent shootout linked to earlier in this thread?
matt
Not many... we were going to do a series of these tests (both Tony and Jerry really wanted to) but I don't think we'll bother.
There would have been a time on GS's where this would have gone over big but now it seems like very few are actually interested in learning about such things.
Oh well, Tony and I wanted to do this DI test for years, so I'm glad we did.
To see some of our work visit the visual trailer montages located at... http://robertetoll.com/ (all music and sound effects were mastered by Silvertone Mastering).
if you don't mind something dedicated to bass the Yamaha pb1 (quite cheep on ebay these days) is floating my boat lately. running it thru a 5042 portico or a 525 (usually not both) ..I would not dare say its 'flat' or accurate but I like the control and it gives me enough of everything that mixing is a breeze .. it also plays well with a good variety of basses ..a rick with roto's a p bass with brite flats and an ebo with flats .. ..not 500 series but only one rack space

Often with these types of threads people just read the title, and post without actually reading through the thread. It's understandable, but it's a pity when there is a resource as great as the one you created, featuring one of the best bassists in the world, that really goes a long way (as far as can be hoped for in a shootout) to answering the question posed.

Thanks Matt, the positive feedback is really appreciated.
Jerry and Tony really want to do more of these in the future.

Cheers bassfuzz, methinks I might go this route with the 500 rack GR

+1 also!!!! I checked out each review completely. I thought it was a great resource for comparing bass DI's. Many thanks for providing great info for those who can use it and appreciate the time and effort put into making it.

Thank you very much. I really appreciated the time that Tony, Jerry and all the producers, engineers and musicians that were there that day put into it... I'm very grateful to them all.
The TAB V71 was the new one being made... best build quality in a DI I ever experienced... sound was fantastic as well.
I like 610-style pres for bass guitar DI. It's what the bass player in my current band used throughout our last recording (UA 2-610). I use a 6176 in my home studio. A little boost at 200 hz, some 4:1 comp, and some gain-stage out.
Nice! What kinda tubes are in there? NOS RCAs? I love the sound of the NOS Telefunkens in my V71.
I've been thinking about replacing the tubes in my Solo-610, but tubes are expensive..
Yup! It's got a set of NOS RCA JAN 6J7's they last for ages, the old 1620 tubes still work but not quite so good noise wise.
Watford Valves have some NOS Mullard ECC83, which would be great in your 610 but they want £95 a tube WOW!
Reddi
Radial
610
BAE 1073mpf
Aguilar Tube DI (I replaced the stock russian tube with a NOS 12AX7, much better)
Nice selection! Have you tried the Reddi into the XLR of the BAE (to hit the transformer)? Sounds like could be killing sir.

Those RCA's just look like a portable mind control device from the old Twilight Zone or something! Beastie retro.. Matching tubes too to round it out.
It looks like I found a source for some great NOS upgrades for my 610, keeping my fingers crossed!
As a person who plays bass for a living, I've been through a lot of preamps and DIs. I'd settled on Eden for a while, but had a very hard time with their unreliability (one of my Eden amps has now been in the shop, a factory authorized shop, for a year. Yuck). So, after my 2nd Navigator broke, I stopped by Grace Design (one of the perks of living in Boulder) and borrowed an M103. During the gigs I had that weekend, it was hard to tell exactly how it sounded, but it seemed really nice. The Navigator got fixed and then broke again 6 months later, so I bought an M103. It sounds great to my ears. Last week my rig (M103, QSC CX1202v and fEARful 15/6/1) was used as a house rig for the Denver recreation of the Band's Last Waltz. Every bass player who played through my rig loved it and the PA guys thought it sounded wonderful, too. Lots of different sounding basses got played through it, from a Modulus Q6 with rounds to my '67 Guild Starfire with '73 Alembic Series II pickups and electronics with flats along with lots of Fenders, and all of them sounded great with the EQ pretty much flat. Unless you want a specifically colored tone, I highly recommend the Grace. I was using an Alembic F2B in front of it for a while (with my pickups in stereo), but right now I'm digging the sound straight in. The M101 will give you just the DI section, but the EQ and compressor are pretty nice. My suspicion is that it won't break down.
