Helios F760

I have a pair of the rare, green-faced Helios F760 compressor/limiters, thinking about selling them. I have a rough idea on what they could be worth, but I just wanted to check if I'm on the right track. If anybody knows what a fair asking price would be, it would be much appreciated. They're in great working condition.

THANKS

I might be interested... Mr Arnold is doing a re-issue on these as well. I am curious though on how one would use these in a signal chain? Do they get rack mounted? Do they need a host desk? Can you use them stand alone?

Very ignorant when it comes to the engineering side but I do know that I want these comps (or the reissues) to go along with the Helios channel strips (PRE/EQ).

Thanks,
Jim

Dear Allarts,
First may I say as a Dog lover yours looks ready for affection.
I think if you check the front plate screen-printing you will most likely see the
initials "LWT" which means "London Weekend Television".
If that proves to be the case, I used to own them myself and the colour is wonderful as is the sound.
Unless the ones you have, are modified, the above might not be the case, as yours does have an extra control (Is it marked Attack or Output).
It should either be called model #F700 or is it #F760.

I would say they should fetch at least $1,500 USD these days as they are rare beasts.
Sadly they are the same height as an ADR F760N module which is slightly higher then the Standard Helios Type-69 Mic Pre, be it the original or the Re-Issue , so therefore will not fit into a Standard size Helios Rack, or the API 500 series. (See Pics below.)

Best Regards

Tony

Hi Tony,

I'm wondering if and or when the F760 comp reissue will be available. I've been checking the "home" site and there doesn't appear to be any info. Also, the thread regarding the comp reissues died. Are they available or should I start hunting originals like the ones in this thread?

Arny....

Did you really have to put a picture up for a tease of the COMP? I want two.

Dear Myles,
We have 50 at the UK office ready for despatch, but I insisted even though the final prototype worked perfectly, that I should check the first one off the production line, it is with me now, being compared with an original, I am very pleased with these final tests, except I want the right hand side plate to have three holes drilled as this will make life a lot easier for Calibration Purposes, not having to use and extension loom

All Helios F760's will leave the works fully calibrated,

I apologise for the delay, but it has not been easy to get a meter to the high spec I required after using an original meter, which was very good, but I felt should be improved upon.

The Helios-F760 is a tool that shows how much one is limiting or compressing, so I wanted it to rest at the right hand position, therefore showing the amount of sound reduction as it descends to the left.

I also wanted the meter to be as large as possible to obtain a more accurate reading, with a black face, so as to match the very high spec finish that is used on the Front Panel of all of our products..

The final question no doubt is "WHEN" and how much.
These should be available from your nearest distributor during the first two weeks of May, and be about the same price, or less, than our Standard size Helios-Type-69.

The 500 series of the Helios F760 (Hoping to only take-up one space) should be available in June, due to space this series will have 5 coloured LED's due to space, but the Meter will be available as an accessory for use as a remote, should one wish.

The Helios 500 Series Type-69 EQ will also be available around the same time, complete with the extra frequencies we alone offer, as well as very high spec components and rotary switches

Apart from the meter, everything inside the Helios F760 is identical to the original, even the PCB's can be swapped and should one require a PCB for their original, they will be available on an exchange arrangement only.

Best Regards

Tony.

This picture shows the high quality switches and components, also to show
the PCB's are the same as the originals, but a much highter spec.

Is it purely a coincidence that the model number F760 was used by as well Helios and Audio & Design Recording, both for limiter/compressor units ?

Dear Studerfreak,
AD&R have always had a great relationship with Helios Electronics Ltd which continues to this day, Richard Swettenham (Helios Founder) liked the AD&R-F600 which was the original model, which later became the F700 and then finally the F760.

Richard requested AD&R to manufacture the two main PCB's ("A" & "B") which were used in the AD&R F760, to be part the Helios-F760 which are still being manufactured today in the re-issue, by Helios Electronics Ltd except, there are subtle changes that Helios designed into their version of the F760.

Helios Electronics Ltd also continue to to maintain & supply parts for all of the original Classic AD&R Gear, as AD&R now manufacture very high quality broadcast modules.

Best Regards

Here is a rough historic picture of the Helios F600 to the F760.

Arny, what is the difference between the F600 and the F760? And why reissue the F760 and not the F600? I was told the F600 had an expander driving the compressor section...could you clarify the way the unit functions?
By the way I am interested in buying a pair, but can't find any of the 500 series for sale so far....
thanks

Dear Michaiel,
The Helios 600 never had an Expander, but the AD&R F700 & 760 did have this Noise-Gate/|Expander facility.

We decided on the Helios F760 as it is the most popular version out out of the bunch.

Thanks for showing an interest, we are now on version 4 of our prototypes, I am now happy with my tests which I have taken today, we will now send out some demo units to our Distributors for their comments.

Best Regards

Tony.
