Best/Cleanest way to split source signal

What is the best way to split a source signal to feed 2 different tracking systems? I want to be able to A/B a vocal track going to tape and to PT but want to keep the signal path as pristine as possible... I wasn't sure if a simple passive split would be the best route or not.

cheers.

If the impedance of the two loads are high enough in relation to the output of your preamp/compressor/channel strip, a Y-cable should be fine. Otherwise a transformer or active splitter box might be necessary.

My guess is that if the load impedance is = or higher than the sum of the two source impedances, you should be fine.

IIMO If the source impedance is low enough (it usually is) and the input impedance of each input is high enough (it usually is too), a simple mult is the quietest way to split a signal. Isolation transformers and trans-impedance amplifiers are useful when this is not the case or when the reference sensitivity of the two inputs is dramatically different.

600 ohm Splitter's. Ipswich, Suffolk.

The best ones on this planet were and are made just down the road from here at Sowter his transformers are the best in the world his only competitor was UL in the states.
Give him a ring as its his firm that still makes them to the quality that old Rupert from Cambridge asked for when he gave him a bell.
