the better your converters, the "better" (more clear, vibrant, sweet, insert more nice words here) your recordings will be. ........granted that you have a good mic, pre, cabling, good sounding room too.

i have my eyes on apogee and lavry. but the benchmarks, lynx and rme are good too. IMHO of course

Your converters turn your audio signal into a digital signal (A/D). That means sound is turned into code (1's and 0's) which can then be worked with in the digital domain (i.e. your computer).

That digital signal must then be converted back into an audio signal so you can hear it from our speakers (D/A).

Obviously the better the quality of this conversion, the better the quality of your end result.

You asked so there was no stupid question. Got some good answers too. Good luck with your purchases.

I would probably get a Apogee AD-16x and the firewire card if you are recording native. Get a big ben, and a Benchmark DAC for your monitoring.

That would be my wish list.
I would also want the API A2D and the Aurora Audio GTQ2mkIII
Oh I almost forgot, A six pack of 500 series pres from A-Designs, Gama, ect..
Different flavors for the taste buds.
Too bad I'm broke cause I know how to shop well.
