Thread Starter | Mic Pre suggestions for CMV563?
Hi All,
Any suggestions or combinations that worked for you for a pre for a CMV563 mainly with the M7 capsule?
I am thinking of an Aurora audio GTQ2. Some might say that since the mic is already tube and has a character I should get a transparent pre, but tube Neumanns are tracked all the time through Neve's, especially back in the day.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

I have 2 cmv563's and have used about a dozen different ones. Most of them are a bit thick and wooly, tho as with most 50 year old electronics they are all a bid different. To fit certain voices, I have found using the proximity effect (or moving away to avoid it) very useful in getting a voice to fit with it.
I have used v72's and I own telefunken 676's. While I love them with my M71's, I generally dont like the thick telefunken sound on the 563 for vocals. It can work well for electric guitar. Similarly, my API's were never a good combination especially when doing close vocal work (the v72 with 563s are amazing for classical recording room mics).
I do like it with a cleaner preamp be it tube or not. I have found my manley preamps are a great combination. In the lower end my Syteks sound great with it. I happen to own a studio tech that sounds similar to a millenia or other very clean preamp, which I love with it. The cmv does great with cheaper preamps too. Ive used it with an aphex and a mackie, both actually blended with my cmv with good results.

guess it really comes down to experimentation given the particular source.
sonics can vary on those old 563's,depends on the age/condition.they can be on the dark side.
Ive had a lot of luck w a 563/ Neve 1073 w a bit of top boost to open it up.
I also got to use a cleaner gordon pre on it and it sounded v nice too.

I agree this is highly subjective and source dependent. In addition it is dependent on the particular mic itself (as is the case with all older mic's - as each is somewhat different given the condition and age and any mods).
I don't subscribe to the notion that if I've got a tube mic I don't want to add a tube pre. I'll try anything and decide for myself. Some combo's I might like, others I might not, but I don't base the selection on any rule.
I've got a completely rebuilt CMV-563 that has AMI iron in it along with Oliver's circuit mods (changed the mic for the better) . I think it works great with my Neve 1272 for vocals. I think it works great with a tube Roll Tubule for vocals. It works fine with a API 512, as well. The API is not my preference (for male vocals with the CMV563) if I could pick something else - but still produces a really good result.
I've not used the Aurora so I can't comment on it, other than to say given who produces it I'd not hesitate to try it. The Neve flavor with the CMV563 to me is fine - better than fine - works great. I like my CMV563/1272 combo for vocals, guitar (acoustic and electric). Works great for me. I'd suggest you try some things and see what works for you.

Thanks for all the comments guys.
I am looking into the Aurora Audio GTQ2 right now, and from your comments, it looks like I'm following the right route going for the 1073 type of sound.
I will experiment at some point (funds allowed) with different preamps. My CMV563 and M7s capsule are in very good condition and sound great, and I've only tried it with a Mackie DXB up to now (their TI/Burr-Brown PGA2500 based preamp). Not toooo bad.
Soon my signal path will be CMV -> GTQ2 -> Apogee Rosetta 800 -> Mackie DXB (via AES so no conversion/influence of the Mackie on the sound) -> DAW (via FW from the DXB)

I use my 563/M7 with the Metric Halo ULN8 pres, Mercury M72 and RCA BA-31a and it rocks with each and everyone.

I love this mic, it must be one of the most underrated mics around...which is good cause it's still relatively cheap.

CMV563 is amazing with my V76. Not sure if it's just a perfect impedance pairing or what, but it really comes to life. Sometimes I'll add a little 10k shelf with a Neve 33122 (for guys especially).

Some day :-)

Frost | hey interesting , i always heard a V72 and the CMV was the dream combo but for my ears the neve 1272 / 1073 worked better. i found the tube tele pre's to be a little more 'honky' , anyone else experienced this ? this was however before i got mine modded by andreas grosser. that made a huge difference to the overall sound. anyone had a chance to compare the CMV to a U47 or good U47 clone like a FLEA just out of interest ?

I have an original cmv3/m7 setup that does love the v72 (I have wondered along if the poster above who mentioned good impedence matching if that is the case. Keep in mind I have the cmv (a different mic) but the v72 is pretty far from honky, so is a neve. I do find the the neve to be more midrange forward than the v72.
A nice alternative is the trp. 1073 is nice too.
