Your fav tube pre for vox ?

As the subject goes.

I've been a hardcore solid-state gear user for so long that I want a tube pre now.

I use 1073's and api for most everything and am happy, nothing's wrong.

But I want to check out what I've been missing out on in the tube-world.

So, what tube pres do you like for vocals, mainly ? Other apps ?

I'm looking at the Pendulum and Manley pres, any experience ?

I'd prefer to buy something non-vintage. Thanx for all and any input.

I havn't heard anything more pleasing than a Telefunken V76.
The ViPre is pretty descent too.
Would like to hear the Fearn?

Audio Technologies TMA-2 is very nice. Very open sounding on the top
and it has the characteristics of a faster sounding solid state pre at the same time
IMHO.

I like the Tab Funkenwerk V-78. You can check it out on the MySpace link below if you listen to the track we have posted. I will warn you that the track is very unfinished and the vocals were cut in about 20 minutes. We just needed something quick, to put up on my band's MySpsace profile. The mic was a Gefell UM92 into the V78, Digi 002. Kind of rough but you get the picture.

I have a Mercury M72s that I have not tried on vocals yet but will probably A/B between the V-78 when it comes time to retrack the vocals.

The pre in the Pendulum Audio "Quartet II"... it has the ability to be like the pre's in the Pendulum MDP-1A, as well as the MDP-1B with selectable input impedance taps.

I use the Manley Tube Pre EQ 500, it's the full differential one.
I love that Pre !!

Depth and clarity it's got, If your looking for lots of color this might not be the one.

I like V72, old-UA, RCA. For new, I'd get a Fearn, even though I've never heard or seen one.

I'll tell you a secret:

Stayne at InnerTube Audio isn't well known for this, but he can build you a tube mic pre that will make you cry.

If you're the kind of person that gets emotional about tone, that is!

i'm going to try my electro harmonix 12ay7 tube pre some more

i plugged in my rickenbacher bass thru a di then into the eh pre and it was a very clean airy bass sound. it was very cool. i'll have to try it on my vocals but it has an airy sound to it. very clean too and a bit wooley midrange. all i can say is the thing seems to filter out the nasty sounds and leaves in the sweetness somehow where as maybe a mackie pre will just leave everthing in there with no sugar coating on top.

I love the Neve 1073 sound and I would never consider using anything else. But if someone forced me at gunpoint to try something tube, I agree with most of the people above, those Telefunken v72's, which from what I understand Rick Rubin used to record Johnny Cash on that last album with the great covers, would be my choice. Would love to try them sometime.

I had a one-off tube preamp made by an old friend "Glenntronic"... It was a great pre and used these old RCA television tubes.... Best sounding tube pre I've ever heard!

Manley SLAM here. Nice tube pre and the comp & limiter sections work well . I've never had to fear a blasting singer since I started using one. Vocal tracks seems to translate to mixes well too.

in fact, the largest quantity of v72's was manufactured by siemens. they are literally thousands compared to the couple hundreds made by maihak or tab.

in germany (where i come from) this is a well known fact, but on these english/american boards people mostly refer to them as "telefunken" pres... anyway, there's no technical difference between them, as long as they are labeled "v72" and not "v72a" or anything else.

Thanx a LOT !

Seems like the V72's get a lot of love, maybe I should reconsider buying vintage..

Kestral, love your 1073-dedication !

My new favorite pre's are the old Electrodyne 201A mic pre's. I've owned quite a few pre's (both solid state & Tube) over the years and these seem to have the most reach of any mic pre I've owned or used. Amazing!

I suggest if you run across one to try it. You've heard these pre's amny times in your life as the old A&R console had them in them. Think Van Morrisons Moon Dance.

Here's picture of one (in the raw)...
