Well.. It depends from the application..
But anything that begins with an MA5 is highly possible
MA5-E27-Tonelux TX5C or a Derresser.. It depends.. Or MA5-Tonelux EQ5P-derresser or MA5-E27-TLA50 (this last one is not a 500 series comp tough)..
Also tracking without the compressor very often.. Just the preamp and the EQ..

Lately it's been the a-designs p1 into an API 553 clone. I LOVE the way the p1 sounds.. then putting the 553 after it, pure buttery goodness |

These days I've mostly been hanging with the CAPI vp-26's or EZ1073's depending.... Been doing a lot of ac & elec guitars & perc as of late and both have been working great for that. Fave compressor on the 2 buss is the new SB4001. Really great. EQ? Still using the ol 550A's.

I have a DIY 553 that sounds great but not super flexible for the frequencies. So it doesn't always get used. But I have plenty of other eq options if need be. But usually this chain is more then enough.
No other 500 comp that I really have found that I love yet. So I usually use my la2a or one of my versions of the 1176's.

It depends on what I'm tracking, but I have really been digging:
Vintech 573/API 560b/BMD Komit
Or
BAE312/GR32eq/API 527
I sometimes add a little labs VOG to either one of these chains.

Which opamps do you use for your acoustic and electric guitars in the ML?? I like 1731 & reddot for acoustic and 1731 & Gar2520 for electric. Quote:

Several favorites, but my main ones lately are:
LaChapell 583e - Retro Doublewide
Avedis MA5 - Harrison EQ - API 525b
API 512c - API 550b - API 525c
Any combination of these has worked well for me.

Thanks,
E | here's a link to the build thread. 5003 eq building and help.
unfortunately boards and inductors are no longer available.
Jeff from Classic API should have his version of the 553 for sale soon, can't wait! Like Dan said, they aren't very versatile, but they're excellent as a 'sweetening' eq.

6 month old thread? No matter!
Chandler Little Devil Pre -> Inward Connections Brute. Haven't actually purchased an EQ to go with it but after a lot of looking around and testing I'm thinking the Electrodyne 511.
It's a vocal chain so trying to not mess around with too many options, hence the Electrodyne.
The combination of Little Devil and Brute BTW is nothing short of magical. Mid forward and open on top but not the slightest bit of harshness and is really very very warm. So happy with it!
Very coloured. Very awesome.

MA5 > E27.
I prefer my rackmount compressors to anything in the 500 series.

I'm using the Hairball lola (DIY) into LAZ EQN 1084(DIY) and to Empirical Labs DerrEsser if needed.
On the comp side still not have a 500 series comp so i'll use my Chandler Germanium or mi diy 1176 rev J.
Great chains posted already guys

Another vote for the ez1073. Flexible and sounds great. I use the Aphex 651 (Jim Williams mod) for vocals.
Would love to try the Missing Links for the output of my ez1073s.

My pre of choice for some time now on vocals has been the Burl B1. This is also my go-to pre for guitar and bass. On my drumset it sees the light of a Shure Beta91 with a Beta52 pairing along on a Five Fish x12 at the port hole. The Burl just has a sound that my aesthetic agrees with. EQ and comp is all rackmount stuff.

AS far as OP topic.
My favorite 500 series chain would have to be ma5 -> e27 -> bac500
On vocals i like an la2a(DRIP build) after the e27
Lots of combos really.. depends on the situation.

No go-to per se (isn't that part of the beauty of a lunchbox) but I've found these to be excellent:
Avedis MA5>Avedis E15>FCS P3500
and for guitars:
CAPI VP28>553>525

No 500 preamp yet, I don't do many recording gigs these days.
But for mixing vocals I use this chain very often:
API 525 -> Pendulum DS 500 -> GR Harrison 32EQ.
