What next? Compressor or 2nd pre?

Hey guys,
so I'm selling a bunch of junk to fund my next 500 series module and am going back and forth about whether to get another pre or a compressor.

I currently have a lunchbox, Avedis MA5 and a Mojave MA200 tube mic + a few Sm57's and Studio Projects C1. I'm about to Upgrade from an mbox 2 pro to and mbox 3 pro for better conversion.

I'm really happy with the vocal sound I'm getting now with the Mojave and MA5 (and for acoustic guitars etc it's is killer, takes EQ crazily well if needed), but it'd be nice to have some compression on the way in if needed.

However, I'm also recording Electric Geetars and was thinking of a dual mic setup so was thinking about also getting another pre for that (combined with a ribbon mic).

Anyway I am going to get another pre amp and a compressor / eq at some point obviously, but just now only have cash for one module really.

Probably up to $1k

So I would like opinions on 1. What you'd get first! 2. The individual modules!

I thank yuuuu...

So Pres:
BAE 312
API 512
Chandler Germanium

Comps:
Purple Audio Action
API 525
API 527
Elysia xpressor 500
Chandler Limited Little Devil Compressor

What about MA5 number 2?
Overheads, dual-mic'd gtr. amps, other stereo scenarios...

I had thought about that, and getting a matched pair of Mic's to go with! Hmmm...

Two MA5s look good next to each other.
What compressor would depend on what kind of music. So go for a pre first.

Its pretty hard to go wrong with a Purple Audio "Action"... they seem to transcend genre quite nicely.

Peace

That is true! I'm a graphic designer as well as musician so I'd be lying if I said that matching faceplates and symmetry are not appealing to me.

I think overall the question would come down to:

would you rather record in stereo? (need another pre)

or

would you mainly record in mono but want to control the dynamic range? (need a compressor)

Kind of depends on what you are doing!

Ha yep. A bit of both really.

I mean, I'm recording full band stuff this weekend both for my friends band and then some drums for my own band afterwards and so am borrowing an LA610 and another lunchbox with 4 512s to take up the slack!.

But then the majority of the time is mono overdubs!
I guess realistically another pre would be best first.

My sentiments exactly. I would start there. Then pair up your MA5

A Komit or Lil Devil may suit you too.
