Mix sounds great on some superb speakers.... but on headphones the mix still sux ?!?

This makes me really annoyed.
The mix sounds really great on the speaker set (animas which I bought to have a great accurate mixing reference).... but on the headphones the drums are still not there as some of the sounds...

How can I get this out of the way now and in future ?
Cos i hate having the feeling I have to start all over double checking in phones plus on the set.

And OMG I sure hope its not the same all over when I get my mono Mixcube to check on that !

Thanks in advance.

Tune your room and so its as flat as possible and make sure your mixing on studio monitors with a frequency response that is near to flat. If you cant hear the true sound, your mixes will never translate onto other stereo systems and environments

its the room, if you can't afford loads of treatment buy a used KRK ERGO - you don't have to mix through it the whole time, but it really is great to have as a reference

Be careful as often you can get too used to the way it sound from the speakers, that your headphone mix could be good, but relative to your speakers it will always seem bad to you.

Could be your room also.... Most likely actually.

But don't be to hard on yourself either. I recommend that you get a good night sleep and then check the headphone mix in the morning. If your are still not happy, remember that you cannot get a headphone mix to sound 100% like a monitor mix. Different environments. The best you can do is to get it sounding good in both...maybe not 100% perfect, but gods in both...But that is assuming you have a good mix room.

Out of curiosity, is the bass alot louder in the cans? If it is, its definitely a room problem.

I'm with the others in making sure your room and monitoring is good.

That being said, I have 3 sets of monitors and 2 pairs of headphones that I regularly switch between while mixing. They each tell me different things about the mix. These are all speakers and headphones I know really well.

this is why I became an ATC addict - even in a bad room I can get a mix that translates 90% first time. big outlay though

Its not the room, its well treated with GIK panels all around.

Its not the speakers, they dont sound boomy nor the room.

I am not saying the headphone mix sux 100% but it sounds not as nice as I feel my monitor mix.

So I think I should switch often between mono mixcube, stereo set and phones to balance the best between these 3 references.

ATC is a well known but expensive speaker brand.

You are helpful!
I will get a great set of phones and will check bass.

Its maybe not flat but its quite close I believe.

I will render the mix and audition in the car and living room and double check.
And I need phones as a triple check in future for sure!

Something out of phase in the monitor chain? This recently happened to me with ONE patch cable that was out of phase.

Your headphone amp/send before the monitor's final audio feed perhaps?

If not... then just keep working on the mix until it sounds good on nearfields, mains, cans, earbuds and computer speakers. The latter two is what most music is listend to/on these days.

Headphones vary all over the map and I would never use a set for mixing.

I check my mixes over several sources, including my acid test the car radio. Room treatment and decent monitors does help but there are so many other elements in the chain.
