What Should I Buy Next

I'm stuck, I want to purchase a pair of Telefunken C12's or 10 API 550a's for tracking and mixing. I can't get both right now and have a very handsome mic collection but can't figure out what would serve me better.

I work on mostly rock, some jazz and also a small amount of classical.

My mic locker today consists of:
Telefunken U47, Brauner VM1 (2), Lucas CS-4, Wunder CM7, Bock 251, Microtech-Geffell UM 92.1, Bock 195, Josephson e22 (4), Josephson C42 (3), Coles 4038 (3), Microtech-Geffell M-300 (2), ”Original” Handmade Mojave LDC, Mojave MA-200, AEA R92 (2), AEA R-88, AEA R-84, Royer SF-1, Royer 121 (2), Crowley and Tripp Naked Eye, Peluso P-Stereo, Peluso P-28 with custom premium power supplies (2), Peluso 2247LE (modified with Beezneez capsule), Technica 4033 (2), Michael Joly OktavaMod 219 (2), Shure KSM 27, Shure KSM313, Sennheiser 421 (5), Electrovoice RE-20, AKG D112, Shure SM57 (2), BeyerDynamic M201, Rode N4, MPC Custom Tube LDC (2), Fox Audio Research C12+, plus quite a few others……

EQ's I have are a Manley Massive Passive and a Chandler Curve Bender.

Help me make a wise choice.

Thanks

Paul

Without knowing more about what other outboard you have, I'd look at either a number of different EQ's, or stick with API's (550A, 550B, 560) if you want a consistent flavour, much like a console. What pre's do you have ??

Lovely collection of mics you have there btw. I'd be interested to know more about Brian Fox's C12's ..

Paul seems to be lookin' for 550A's, [API EQ] in which case I would, +1 the 550A's or simply 10 amazing 500 EQ's to mix and track with, compared to a pair of new tele c12 mic's. Even though, the Tele's are amazing, I would rather have 10 equalizers in my rig, and I don't have nearly as many cool mic's to use as Paul does.

If I were in your shoes, with all those great mics, I would consider getting a pair of Langs and three 550a EQ's and maybe a couple 560's.

PS. First I would go with mic pre's. What kind of pre-amps do you have? With all those great mics, a wide selection of pre-amps too and the need for EQ diminishes tremendously.

Nice mic collection! I'm not sure I'd spend on another mic if I were in your position. Though I'm not experienced enough to say if the C12 would fill any 'gaps' in what you have already?

Otherwise, I'd get the eq's though I'd probably mix in a few others with the 550a's, unless there's a deal involved when buying 10, just for variations sake.
