Should I get 2 Neve 1073 LB 500 series?

I'm thinking I'm gonna sell my racked great river mp-2nv pre two channels and use the money to add two 500 series modules - neve 1073LB mic pre's to my lunchbox (10 slot). Also I have two great river harrison 32 eq's and just wondering also what some other good eq's that aren't too expensive ($1000 <) I'm interested in the Maag, and of course API would be great the 550b version with 4 bands. Just wondering what anyone thinks about trading in a great river pre for a neve 1073LB I know that the 1073LB is not the "big cheese" as it were from long ago but a retail site is selling neve (not portico I think they just paid Rupert Neve to put his name on their hardware) eq's and mic pre's.

I'd not sell the GR 19" for the ams 1073LB..

That said if you really want a great preamp for the 500 series that have that "N" signature buy the Avedis MA5, you will also save some money (compared to the ams). You can't go wrong with it..I wrote a review of the MA5 also, but you don't have to trust me, there's plenty of other users that really like this preamp.

As for the EQ's.. There's plenty of choices outhere... Depends so for what you're going to use it on.. API 550 is a classic for a reason, I don't know the Maag, but I have the Tonelux which is nice if you need something very accurate and sculpting, another EQ I was amazed by was the Electrodyne 511..wow! It's just 2 bands and few frequencies per band but the sound is very very nice, super smooth and broad..It's a tiny bit over 1k, which I find a bit expensive in all honesty, but the sound is really great!
Another very very nice and versatile EQ in the 500 series was the Avedis E27, simply stunning.. 3 band, a lot of frequencies to choose, and everthing that passes through these units benefits from it, even without EQing... unfortunately Avedis doesn't do these anymore because it's very time consuming (since his business is only one man operation and he wanted to concentrate on other new stuff), but if you're lucky you might find one in the classifieds..

Just my 0.02$,

I have 2 1073lb and they ROCK. I think most people that don't like them haven't actually heard them.
Just sayin'
Peace.

.... Or they compared them with other units and didn't like them. All things are possible.

Either way, I can't get passed the circuitry differences, while still labeling it a 1073.

I may on occasion talk about some of the products I am a dealer for in my posts.. and that's OK! I sell them because I like them. Not vice versa. It's more fun to talk about things you know and love, then things you don't.

The 1073LB is great, but I agree with others so far...

DON'T sell the racked GR to get 2 500 modules of any kind. Not worth it.
And I also agree, the MA5 is fantastic for way less $ than the Neve...

You might want to give the five fish audio inductor based eq's a look....I want to remember that they're about $400 apiece. Well within your budget and a nice addition to the collection..

Keep the Pres, however get the 550b EQ, both the 3 and 4 band sound awesome, its limited but I get great vibes from even the waves API plug ins and I'd imagine the analog ones are even better.

I agree with you, but he's right.. That number is there only to represent sales, nothing more..ahh..marketing!

That said it could sound great or awesome or whatever you want but it's not a 1073... (and I'll get something else, but this is personal taste I guess..).

Fair enough, although it would be nice not to see another thread degenerate into branding policies again. The OP asks a straightforward question, there are other threads with plenty of arguments for and against AMS marketing of the 1073lb. Personally I think the 1073lb is a fantastic tool. I use it with my Rode NTK, the 1073lbEQ and the 2264alb. Great for tracking Vocals and Bass, really smooth compared to my API 512c. Love the 512c too! Happy.

They are surface mount which scares me. This makes it impossible for most techs to work on them. Plus they are not field serviceable. Just my thoughts since there are so many other 500 series pres out there.
