Gefell M71 made in GDR version

I just jumped on one of these that came up for sale. But now am learning, in retrospect, about the difference between the GDR made versus the made in Germany ones.

Any "GDR" owners out there who can reassure me? I haven't received mine yet but am wondering if I made a mistake. It's from Madooma and was converted to 48 V by Andreas Grosser and also upgraded with a low-noise transistor.

I love Gefell but now this whole GDR vs. Non-GDR thing has me a little skiddish....

okay, Martin at Madooma has assured me that the mic has been completely re-worked by Andreas Grosser
and will be up to the Microtech Gefell standard

All the "vintage" ones are made in GDR, so what... it only means they are older and some can have old age issues...

It is the same company, same technology, only the wall fell in between.

The fact that some of the last transformer ones were made in now united Germany only means they are more current - but that could be a difference of a few years for some...

Congratulations on getting a superb mic! You will be happy.

Nice voice, back off with the "toob" though, it distorts when you shout.

To re-assure you some more - some spoken word examples with my "made in GDR" MV692/UM70 non-XLR version: http://www.gearslutz.com/board/7417390-post10.html

Yeah, I read some posts that said watch out for the "GDR" ones but mine sounds great and it was purchased from a very reputable outfit and serviced by Andreas Grosser......

man, now I know what people are referring to when they talk about the "creamy" mids of this mic.....

WOW

Have been playing with this thing for about a week now....with the:

A. Right mic placement and distance

B. Right Pre-amp and pre-amp settings...

.....the result is a sound which makes me see (hear) why this is so often compared to a vintage U87
VERY similar sound, even has that signature Neumann sheen and bite

(but a lot more affordable)

BUT...with the WRONG placement and settings.....sounds thin and un-exciting
