| Lives for gear | Question on GML 8200 EQ
If you had a good linear plug in EQ like the one in Samplitude Pro X or the Red EQ, would the GML 8200 offer you something unique and helpful that the plug in would lack? I understand the 8200 is a wonderful super clean EQ that has a little hard diamond character. But I am not clear what it would offer that a very good linear EQ would lack. Thanks |

Not a direct answer but V.K have some samples on their page ran through, amongst others, GML. Used an Inward Connections 4-band and it sure sounded different from the linears I´ve tried: Logic/Waves. Adding AD/DA could be a crucial factor of course.

If you mean linear phase EQ that's a bit of an apples-to-oranges kind of thing but in any case I have a ton of plug-ins yet still run multiple tracks through my analog GML (and then print for ease of recall) all the time. Even with the conversion etc. it sounds better almost always. I don't bother if I'm just doing a couple of cuts but for anything that needs air or substantial boosting the GML is great. Analog EQ in general (I have/use a Sontec also which I really love) sounds more three-dimensional to me than digital. The difference is big enough to me that I've opted against the grain to invest personally in analog EQ before analog compression (and I've used lots of classic high-end analog compressors). Just my subjective opinion and my situation may not fit yours but I hope this helps... |

I used to think that compressors were where hardware excelled over plugs until I used high end hardware EQs. I haven't used the GML but I have worked with the Elysia Museq, which is comparable to the GML as a high-end, clean EQ and it blows my mind. I agree with grrayson above when he says that hardware EQs sound more 3-D. Before the Museq, my go-to software EQ was the Sonnox Eq, which is considered one of the better plugs, but to my ears it sounds "hard" after working with the Museq. It's tough to explain...not harsh, but hard if that means anything. Nowadays I'm not so concerned with hardware compressors other than to use them to compress on the way in, but once the track is recorded in I don't mind using plug compressors if more compression is needed but I'm more adamant about using a hardware EQ whenever possible. Or to clarify, I think a high-end hardware EQ excels over plugs even when it comes to clean, but plugs are definitely comparable to regular hardware EQs so I wouldn't start using cheaper hardware EQs instead of plugs. Regards, Frank
