Old school studios in New Orleans?

Anybody know of any decent studios in New Orleans that have a load of vintage equipment and tape machines?
A friend of mine wants to go there and have his band recorded.

Thanks.

Mods, maybe this subject is better suited for the 'So much gear' section?

Try Piety Street Studios, corner of Piety and Dauphine. Look up their webbsite.

Tell them Paul from Millbrook said hey.
She will take good care of ya.

I did a session at "Sea-Saint" a few years ago... about as 70's as you get. There is a new kinda "vintage" joint that should be either opening soon or perhaps has opened with a rather nice 8078... don't know the name of it - but I have a feeling its going to be a hell of a facility.

Piety St. is also wonderful... the infrastructure there should support anything you have even a remote notion of doing.

Peace

Since I'm still several months away from opening, I would highly recommend Piety or even Dockside in Lafayette if you feel like doing the residential thing. The vibe there is unbeatable. The Music Shed and Fudge are cool as well, but not sure how much vintage vibe, I do know Fudge has an Otari. Please check back with me in six months, will be happy to help you.

Matt,

I'm looking forward to your opening and can't wait to get inside your place and check it out.

Myself and some partners will soon begin construction on a 2500 sq ft studio here in south MS about 1.5 hrs away out of Biloxi.

I hear ya, I was following some of your previous posts about your place. The studio site looked amazing when you were clearing it out and working on that slab... do you have updated pics lately?

We'll have to get together and chat sometime man, I like your musical style and senses... perhaps we can be working partners in this corner of the country one day when we're both up and running full speed. It's always a positive to have another good studio to get to to do work and bring clients to, etc.

If you're looking to "get away" from the hustle/bustle and purely focus on nothing but the music, Dockside as Matt said, is a KILLER facility. I have quite a few friends who've recorded there and they've all loved it!

Not to take anything away from the owners because they are lovely people, but when I was there, they had a new studio manager/assistant who was still very green with regards to the room (I'm sure with time he would have been fine). It was a bit of a challenge getting things patched and getting channels to show up in the right place, but we figured it out. Not sure if he is still there or not, but I'd inquire to make sure that whoever is the assistant is that they are fully knowledgable on getting around the room. Also, ask how recently they've had a tech servicing because that's a very old Neve desk and always in need of tlc.

Didn't Sea-Saint get messed up in Katrina?

Such a shame as your place would have been perfect!!
They're leaving for New Orleans by the end of next week so I have to make a decision for them, pronto.
Thank you all for your suggestions.

Dockside looks to be the most ideal place for them.
Hopefully Matt's experience won't be repeated...

Listen, the owners there are excellent people. The facility is as beautiful and inviting as any I've ever been too. The engineer I worked with was actually a really good guy and with a little more time, I'm sure he would have nailed it. It's not their fault that I booked in a transitional period with new personnel coming in, although it did present a few frustrations of which I was in no way upset, just had to scramble really hard to learn how to patch that room in about 10 hours (I know that sounds ridiculous, but I was also producing so I was setting up drums, tuning them, getting charts written, dialing in guitar/keyboard sounds, etc. before the band got there).

While he and I figured it out, simple questions like, how do I get that line from out there to patch into that point there and return there kinda stuff was met with a look of, "Well, I guess we'll figure that out together". And they are a little off the beaten path so just make sure the console have been serviced recently before booking. It has 56 channels of 31102 module's though so even if a few are on the fritz, you should still have plenty. They have very nice multi tracks and a really great sounding piano as well. Best of luck!!!

Okay, now that I know what he wants to do, I can e more specific.

It's going to be a 30's style blues-y jazzy thing, probably mono recording, very minimal track count.
So their priority is to have someone that's very experienced in that field, so it becomes more about the operator than the room, with some emphasis on just a few channels of vintage equipment.
Any recommendations?
Thanks a bunch.

I second that. While I'd love the work, I'm not very knowledgeable on mono recording. If you need a 70's funk record, that's more my bag.

Music shed

I don't know how much tape gear they have but look into The Music Shed. I've recorded there and loved it. They really know what they are doing and they have AWESOME gear. Best part is they are cheaper Piety.

While I am friends with the owners and have made some cool records there, it's definitely not a tapey old-school joint. Nice place to make a straight to Pro Tools record though and they have plenty of nice gear to help you achieve that. Maybe they have embraced the old ways recently and I don't know about it, but I don't remember seeing a multi-track there ever. Probably in storage like most people's Nature of our business in it's current incarnation unfortunately.

Your first post and you're promoting New Orleans, way to go

Yeah, contacted them. Might be possible to book but it's dependent on clients that have those dates on hold.
Just written to Piety St so don't know how that will turn out, but I'm seriously amazed that of the close to 10 studios I wrote to, the only place to reply to me was the Music Shed.
If any of those places eventually close down, it's certainly not because of the music business.
