I too have a vintage U87. I bought it really cheap and sent it to Klaus for a cleaning and a check-up. It was a really good mic before and I had a lot of hours with it before I bought it from an old studio partner. Now, theres nothing like it.

For V.O.'s you do need to try out everything you can. Rent, borrow, demo, whatever it takes to get a clear idea of whats out there.

I've spent some time with the newer U87ai and it doesnt seem to have the roundness or the depth of field as the older ones and certainly has a somewhat tamer proximity bump.
