Anyone smell something burning

I have a pair of fairly high end near field/midfield monitors that exhibit a burning smell they are pushed really hard. Anyone ever have this happen or know of any possible causes?

Sometimes tubes get too close to plastic. As they warm up, you get that smell. I have a Vox amp that does this. It is the rubber support rings that keep the tubes in place.

Sometimes the smell is a precursor to smoke which leads to fire.

Thanks.. No tubes in it though. I just wonder why it is only at high volume.

They'll get hot, and you've probably got cooling fins on the back if they're active? Fins may be dirty and smokin'.

I'm assuming these monitors have heatsinks?. Do the heatsinks tend to get rather hot to the touch?. The smell could just be very fine dust particles heating up and burning off of them.

something is overheating... voice-coils / drivers? do these units have some kind of overload protection and is that triggering? that's a good sign your pushing them too hard.

ubk right - Fire BAD!

I was told that is probably excess flu and oil burning off from an upgrade and that it will dissipate over time.

I guess we shall see. I'll take pics of the fire if it happens and post the carnage.

Kilgore: Smell that? You smell that?
Lance: What?
Kilgore: Speakers son. Nothing else in the world smells like that.
Kilgore: I love that burnt smell of speakers in the morning. You know one time I smelled it upstairs in the studio for 12 hours. When it was over, I walked up ... The smell ... smelled like [sniffing pondering] victory . Someday this speaker's gonna end ... [suddenly walks off]

Apocaplyse Now

You should get your speakers checked out by a technician.

Its probably from the drivers. The voice coils are wound on a tube made of whatever material and the wire it self is laquered. Also some tweeters use ferrofluid as cooling, you can probably boil some off if you try.

Until the speakers actually start burning I wouldn't worry, but keep a fire extinguisher close by, I guess powder is the best for electronics, no wait Co2 is the best for electronics, it just evaporates. DON'T spray Co2 on yourself or anything else that is alive, you will get instant cold burns.

Anyone smell something burning

Probably a mov/ ptc fuse which is in circuit for protection. At a certain threshold level the device turns on and throws off a lot of heat. In fact ptc devices are used as heaters in coffee pots etc.

Yes, Fire! = BAD!

That would have to be the perfect response. Primal, brief, yet totally apt.
