Funny eBay scam! (if scams are funny)

So, I saw this post for "new Urei 1178" three, each for $500...yeah right. Knowing full well, I couldn't resist so I asked the guy if these were indeed the 2006 Urei 1178 AND if he thought it was better than a "Urei 1180"

This was his response...

"Yes that is correct ait is brand new 2006 1178 unit and it is better then Urei 1180

All you have to do is to find a western union agent and wire the money. Please go on

******//www.westernunion.com/info/age.../selectCountry <******//www.westernunion.com/info/agentInquiryIntl.asp?country=global&POPUP=true&PAGE_NAME=info/selectCountry>

and find the closest agent from your location so you can wire the money(PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU WILL SPELL MY NAME CORECTLY).
The information you need is:

FIRST NAME: ionut
LAST NAME: danila
ADDRESS: 24 altex ave.
CITY: Macin
COUNTRY:ROMANIA
Zip: 82530

Mail me asap after the trasfer is made so I can begin the delivery.
Please send me the info i need to make the delivery.
Thanks"

And while I make a joke...BEWARE

These things are all over the place on eBay right now. I know most of us are wise to it, but when in doubt, ask us, I would...or get numbers or just for fun, screw with 'em

i saw a scam for a manley slam! about 2 months ago with a $2000 buy-it-now from a dude that actually had decent feedback, and the auction was listed in a town in michigan where i have a good friend. so i emailed the seller and asked if i could send my friend over to check it out and make sure it works and if it did we'd cash'n'carry.

i could tell from the emails this guy didn't have a manley slam!, and this complete dipshit actually gave us his address.

so my buddy gets wasted drunk and has a friend drive him there. they ring the doorbell and of course no one answers, then they look into the window next to the front door and see the guy hiding behind a small living room desk. it was like he imagined that the manley slam! would magically appear in his house if my friend went there. of course it didn't. and now he's got a 6'4" drunk guy at his front door screaming "GIVE US THE SLAM! GIVE US THE SLAM!" in a slum near detroit with a dozen people watching curiously.

amazing.

That's a good one...

I bet if we keep calling these guys on their B.S., we can make some sort of dent...or at least let them know that the music gear guys aren't easy targets.

At least I'd like to hope!

interesting. scam aside i just checked the guys 1178 pics and it ties in with a thread i posted that received no response. i own an 1178 that looks like the one in the pic. the thread was to ask if anyone knew if there were different revisions of 1178. the one in the scammers pic has no black outline round the front panel, and only a black logo silk screened on the front, whereas others i have seen have a protruding blue urei badge and a black outline round front panel controls.

Can anyone enlighten me?

are these purely cosmetic differences? which is older?

cheers

Scams

You are so right - this should be a forum that people can come to to find the scams.

I might 'umbly suggest a sticky thread documenting all scams. Ebay is a good tool for making the right deals for high end audio but will be useless if the scammers take over. I don't buy anything any more unless I talk to the seller on the phone, and get a non-virtual reference.

I don't understand why ebay doesn't require its members to have a bank account to sign up (like paypal, which is now owned by ebay!). Of course it won't eliminate all scammers, but it will sure cut down on the amount of fraudulent ebay postings.

Of course in other countries it may not be so easy for ebay to confirm bank accounts, but if it's in another country that doesn’t have a good banking system, then the buyer should beware anyways.

I have a question regarding to this topic.
Today I saw a nice used unit in mint condition on e bay and it is around 2K.

Does pay pall really can avoid that I get scammed?

No, they don't.

They send you a canned apologetic note saying they have tried unsuccessfully to retrieve your money from the scammer. Not very encouraging.

I'll tell you what to do in questionable sales, as I have done: Use Paypal, but pay with American Express. the one time I did get screwed, I made one call to Amex, and they asked if I filed a report with Paypal, I said yes, and they credited my account. No other credit card is this great with this type of thing.

No thats no longer true. If you pay with paypal, they absolutely can get the money back but JJ is right- its WAY easier with a credit card, especially AMEX. If you use paypal the safest way is to just pay via credit card/paypal option and if you get scammed, the credit card company will reverse the charges.

I bought a pair of mics from Germany and they came with a non functional cable. I tried to email the seller but got no response (and the mics were $3000) so I filed a claim with paypal just for the cables (small issue I know but I got upset he wouldn't respond). Paypal pulled the money back and held the entire 3000. All the sudden I got an email from Germany! But it turned out he had a server issue and missed emails for 2 weeks (which made sense cause he really was an awesome seller- he only received the paypal emails) so all was fine. I released the claim, got new better cables and he was given his money.

BOTH of us have well over 100 feedbacks at 100% on ebay and they pulled the money that day.

SO, I wouldn't be surprised if once and a while you fall through the cracks but as someone who has used paypal for YEARS, I feel pretty safe using it!

BEWARE- the ONLY way you get screwed is if they send you an item and the issue is condition or function. Then it can get messy. BUT as far as receiving the actual item, Paypal is pretty good.

Unless your information is *extremely* recent, then I'm afraid you are mistaken. As of 8th October 2008 the situation was as I described. FWIW, the following is an excerpt of a "Resolution of Buyer Complaint" email I received from PayPal on that date:

So much for "PayPal buyer protection". Ha!

And, FWIW, JJ's solution sounds fine for some - except that PayPal does not accept AMEX account payments from those of us outside the USA.

I had an issue with eBay recently, and Paypal refunded me.

I won an auction for a roadcase, and after the auction, I never recieved ANY form of communication from the seller for about 7 days. So, I filed a claim with paypal, thinking I got worked over (it was only a $200 item), and magically I got an email from the seller the very next day, asking why I filed a dispute with Paypal.

"I'm sorry, I only check my emails on the weekend".

Well, don't use eBay if you can't keep track of your auctions.

It probably all depends on the situation, but that's the only time I've ever had a problem and it worked out OK.

My situation was in November 2008 so it is more recent. Paypal and Ebay policies have changed quite a bit over the last 6 months. If you got stuck out of luck, you just didn't find the right approach. Paypal can decline a ligitmate claim and if you don't fight it, its of no loss to them...

Of course I don't know the specifics of your transaction which may have other aspects Im not aware of.

And yes, I was also surprised they pulled the money back so quickly as I did NOT expect them to because of how Paypal was handled prior. Ive had 2 other issues with transactions and paypal and they all worked out in my favor but not a simply as this recent one.

So in short, yes its VERY different now. If you qualify for protection, you qualify period. They specifically state what invalidates buyer protection so if you play by their rules, you are covered- but you are right this is VERY different than before.

I would tell him you are interested, but that he has to help him out. You'll send a special check for twice the money. He can send the units along with the balance on the check for the excess money.

Haa... all you naysayers lose - I just bought TWO Urei 1180's from a member of the Nigerian royal family! Apparently he only used them to record crowning ceremonies. Very low mileage. Who's laughing now eh?

There was a guy last month on Crasigslist selling a Neumann M49 for $1900. With all accessories and Blue P/S. Plenty of pictures was great till I asked to send my Uncle to pick it up in Chicago. He said he had moved to Toronto and wasn't able to get back, so I told him I could arrange also to have it picked up from there too....then came the BS excuses and never heard from him since.

Just a heads up, coz I'm sure he's still out there...
