I am not totally sure of the model numbers, but isn't the Pearlman like $1400 and the Wunder like $5500? Are they in the same realm with each other?

I've got at pearlman and it is a great microphone regardless of its price, a bit to much top for my personal taste. Perfect in dense arrangements where I often don't have to use eq at all. The dark switch has never worked(not technical that is..) for me... I havent heard the other microphone but compared to a great U47 It is pretty different. With only piano and acoustic guitar I'm pretty sure I would choose yhe U47 (or even U87) most of the times. |

Listened to them both at AES and preferred the Wunder. Also liked the larger Wunder (in the 'vintage' mode) and the Horch.

Those thousands of people walking through that hall in the background really allow you to hear the subtle characteristics of a mic. You're really hearing the curve of the headphones more than the mic in those demo scenarios anyway.

I've heard both. I had the Pearlman for about a year and found it to be a great mic and probably one of the best values out there. I just got to audition the CM7 a few days ago (in a studio environment) and it's in a different category than the Pearlman altogether. Given that the components to build the two mics are completely different I think that it's really an apples and oranges comparison. The Wunder is almost other-worldly, it sounds huge, warm and unlike anything else I've ever heard. The CM7 transformer is a reproduction of the transformers that were put in the first 500 or so U47s made and no one else is using that transformer. The resulting sound is unbelievable and unless you get an early U47 or the Wunder you're not going to get that sound. I think if more people had the opportunity to hear the CM7 for themselves there'd be a helluva waiting list. They're all hand- made and custom tuned. I'd kinda like to keep it a secret until I get one for myself.

Pearlman TM1 is one of the best purchases in sub 2 k price range. It's not alone there, but probably the coolest mic next to the company of top contenders. It would be unfair to compare it straightly with best of the bests as Wunder CM7, Wagner U47 or similar exceptional mics, although on some sources it might be preferred over anything. Can you do world class recording with TM1? No doubt. Is it overall same class as CM7? No. Is CM7 worth 3 times TM1? Hard to justify, bit here we talk about last inches, so who cares about several thousands |

I've recently owned both and found that they are totally different mics.... like, waaaaay different. I was producing young pop singer Jesse McCartney and immediately put him on the Wunder, thinking it would be a match made in heaven. It was awful on him... mind you, we're talking about one of those voices that just doesn't sound great on every mic. We tried a few others... no happiness... then we tried the Pearlman and it was a perfect fit. I recently used the Wunder CM7 on a young female pop star and it was ridiculously good. However, I've since sold them both when money got tight a few months ago and opted for the Bill Bradley 47 that he builds from scratch for around $4700. I love this mic and can't recommend it highly enough.

For the price you cannot go wrong with the Pearlman. And... my personal experience is that the service is excellent. you might want to give Dave a call and explore your options. |

Have tried and used the Pearlman and the Wunder C7-GT (less $ than the C7), and found both high quality but thought the Wunder was definitely better, as it might ought to be at more money... But, as Greg Wells points out, more $ doesn't always translate into the right thing. Ultimately, we sent both back and stayed with an old 87 refurbed by Korby, which isn't totally perfect all the time, but is very good much of the time and better for us than either the Pearlman or the Wunder GT was. Both the Pearlman and the Wunder C7-GT sounded very new to us, especially in their high end -- kind of 'pop" EQ'd without any EQ. The more expensive C7, as opposed to the C7-GT, is supposed to be very good, but at that price you should be trying a bunch of things, as Greg Wells points out...

I'd put the Wunder on a higher tier than the Pearlman and I don't feel like it would be fair to compare them. So, yes, CM7. Easy one.

i have owned both the cm7 and the tm1. I like them both. they are both good. with that said, the wunder sounds three dimensional, less abrasive, and has a lower noise floor. my pearlman had an ef86 tube, so, maybe that explains the noisefloor. The pearlman i had was brighter than my wunder and kinda 2d with a hyped highend. I guess that could be useful in certain situations. personally, i feel like i upgraded when i sold the pearlman to get the wunder. there is just something better about the midrange....it's so much smoother. That smoothness is what i was looking for in a vocal mic. I already had a shure Sm7b when i got the Pearlman. For me, the quality of those two mics was about the same in a mix(2d and highlight sibilance on my voice). I was always trying to make the pearlman sound big and smooth and like i was right there in between the speakers. the wunder already sounds like that. now, with the right eq, i can make the sound be bright if i want....but it's already big and smooth. if i had to do it over again, i would skip the pearlman and go straight to the wunder cm7. you really can't go wrong between these two mics, though. |

Also, I prefer the CM7-GT to the Pearlman. The GT is a less expensive version of the CM7.
