Thread Starter | Rupert Neve Designs Portico VS AMS Neve 1073 DPD What to think about those two brands ? The new Neve Portico 5012 is half the price of the AMS Neve 1073 DPA, what to think about that price difference ? Is there a real "hype" concerning the AMS Neve products that make them so expensive ? In terms of sound, how do they compare ? |

| Hi.. I think the best way to judge is to demo them yourself.... The price difference is much less when comparing to the AMS reissues or original 1073 modules. I love the 1073 sound and have invested in a DPA and think its wonderful....I am, however, also planning to get a Portico in the future.... ![]() |

| Decisions.... I've demo the 2 units side by side and decided to go with the dpd.. You also get to really great channels of a/d.... As far as quality goes.... They are both great pieces you can't go wrong with either... but it was something about that dpd that simply grab me a little more when tracking different sources... vocals, keys.... I was however impressed with the portico... especially at that price... it held it's own next to the dpd.... I also like the sweepable high pass filter on the portico... I think for the price it's a really great deal more than the dpd... but the dpd had just a little more sparkle for my taste that i liked... I also demo'd a mp-2nv at the time... That was great as well... maybe you should consider this... it is right in the middle as far as price... and everyone raves about them... I thought it was very impressive as well.... Dr. Clisby |

| i have the 2 units side by side right now. the portico is a great clean but not sterile peamp. it's got a little color but it's subtle. very smooth sound. the 1073 is to my ears on another level. not that i don't like the portico, i think the two complement eachother EXTREMELY well. but the 1073 is out of this world. i have never heard kick and snare sound so THICK. that's the best word. just gives tracks the most body i have ever heard. but depending on the source the difference is less noticeable. that said, the 1073 on grand piano is breathtaking because of that thickness. so creamy! |

| Lives for gear | Yes that good old Nevesound has more depth, richness, cream or however you like to say! I found similar results with the Averill's. I would say the Portico range, which I tested, sounds a bit more SSLish clean! Not in a bad way of course, but if you want that little fatness in the depper midfrequencies the AMS tools are the ones to get! Try these Pres with a MPC! They give real character to that drumboxes! Like the cream on your cake or a strawberry in your glass of champagne! |

| Hi, I have two Rupert Neve items which I wish to identify, one is possibly a pre-amp No. EV10767 the other appears to be a power supply No. EV10766. Can any one please help to identify these. Many thanks Vic |

| I participated in a shootout of the 1073, GR and 5012. The best one varied according to the vocalist. At different points in the shootout each one was better depending on the source. Also remember, the 1073 is a preamp and EQ so overall more verstatile. We disengaged the EQ during the shootout, the difference was very slight between the 1073 and the 5012, the GR had a little more low mid. |

| The AMS Neve is special on vocals. It maintains an unusual level of detail even in strained passages that just creates the effect of more content and nuance. It makes you realize how much drops out of a vocal on a normal Pre. |
