best floor tom mic?

My friend Joe Zook turned me onto the RE 20 on the floor tom, which for some reason I'd never heard or thought of. It's gooood. Any other thoughts?

Also Great is Audio Technica AE2500

No I don't work for them, I just heard it on a floor tom and was very impressed to say the least. RE-20 is One of my True Favourites Though cuz i praise having No Proximity effect for those vocalists that won't stay still

I just bought an AE2500 a few days ago when someone posted somewhere on here saying it was great on guitar amps. I'll def. try it on the floor tom... thanks, guys.

I recently used the BLUE Dragonfly Deluxe's on some toms with pretty decent results. Here is an MP3. - Rough Mixed...

Usually ATM 25 here as well. I use a pair of AKG414's on the rack toms, but sometimes if the kit has only one rack tom I'll use the other 414 on the floor tom - and it sounds killer.

Usually it's a RE20 on my floor toms but once in a while I love the U87 on floor toms - silly me

i actually like my Beyerdynamic TG-X 50. Huge and Fat.

then the RE 20 will go on the Bass Cab.

the RE 20 is a bit tighter.

but sometimes i switch, RE-20 on Floor Tom and TG-X50 on bass. depends....

i have also used my KIWI. = H U G E !!

I've had success with an SM7, RE20, TLM-103, 414, SM57, SM58, Octava MC-012, etc.

Oh and even a simple AKG D112 can sound like the voice-of-god on a nicely tuned floor tom.

The RE 20's are fine.
There are many mics that work on toms as well.
Audix D6 and Senhiser 421.
I would stick with the RE 20 if you've had luck with it.
Tunning is more important anyway.

I love the D112 mic. It's also good on guitar amps for a darker sound. I'll have to buy a third one now.

D112 on floor here as well... when I don't have enough 87's around... which is pretty much always.

I also dig "transformerless" sm57's and 58's as well. You loose around 10DB of gain but not a problem with toms most of the time. Worth checking out if you get a chance.

Getting Lazy

To avoid a multitude of mic stands, I have started using these small sennheisers. I prefer a nice condensor like a gefell UMT-70, but the sennheisers sound real good. They have been working great.

No complaints.

Hi Greg -

I have had great results with all of these on FT:

U87
Beyer M88
Sennheiser 602
SM7

Check out the Heil PR30 and PR40. Those are nice too!

I typically use MD421, D112 (well until I sold it...piece of junk), ATM25, Studio Projects B1.

Like so many others, I like the U87 on floor toms.

Added-value comment:

One thing I learned from Michael Stavrou's book, Mixing With Your Mind about recording drums in general is to find the best placement for the set in a room by walking around banging on the floor tom until you find the most resonant spot (easier to do with two people, one to bang and one to listen), then placing the floor tom at this spot and placing the other drums in relation to it. The hypothesis is that the floor tom produces the most bass sound in the set, so finding the best spot for it is critical to getting a good drum sound overall. I've used this method of finding the sweet spot for drums several times and do think it works pretty well.

I do the same except with the snare. I'll try a tom next time. But with snares you can really tell where they really pop in a room.
