SSL ALPHA MADI to Motherboards sound card?

Hey guys,

I've got a drummer who has a small recording setup for practice and laying down ideas. Now that he has his ideas down, I want to take a small portion of my studio over there and record his drums.

Is it possible that I could just take my SSL Alpha and preamps over there and plug the light pipe into his laptop's sound card? It has a light pipe connector on it. I haven't messed with ADAT all that much so I wasn't sure. I was going to go to BestBuy after work and pick up a cable and try it out on my PC first.

Thanks

MADI lightpipe isnt the same as ADAT/TOSLINK lightpipe. Different protocol different connection.

The SSL has ADAT inputs and outputs and one Fiber Optic MADI connection.

However, I found out that this won't work anyway, because NO ONE makes a sound card with an ADAT input. The motherboards sound card has and ADAT ouput. There is a company that has a USB ADAT output interface, but it has no inputs. I was hoping to find just ONE interface with one input and one output ADAT. Nothing like that seems to exist. Everything is $200+. I was looking for one around $50 or so.

On a stock motherboard, it's most likely to have an optical spdif output, rather than an ADAT. Even though they both use a toslink connector, spdif is more widely used in consumer applications.

I just checked and you're right, it is just an S/PDIF in optical format. Someone really needs to make a PCI card that has one or two ADAT input and outputs.

Check with RME, I believe that they may have something along these lines in a PCI card.

EDIT: D'oh!

I've got an RME HDPS MADI that I use with it. I was just wanting something cheap that would just have an ADAT in and out.
