I know Todd-AO West has a room. Cost wise anywhere from 5-10K a day with engineer I think....We mixed a 30 sec theatrical trailer just a little over 2 hours was over 5K.

I seem to recall SSI on Sunset having a THX room. Don't know their rates, but IME it's anywhere from the high $100's to $1K/hr for a mix stage.

All the certified one's are on the list. You'd have to go through THX to get certified, so they'd know.

Most music studios aren't THX certified. They don't need to be. Is this for a post project or something? You only really need THX certified mix rooms for post work. For music, you just need to find a good surround set-up.

I'm not sure why you'd need to have a THX certified room either.

Most Theatrical distibution of spots (assuming it's a commercial or similar) thru companies like National Cinemedia typically request a mixdown to 5.1 with RT/LT on 7 and 8 (for delivery on a D5). I've also submitted 5.1/RT/LT on a DA88 with a 2 beep to match a neg cut and output to film to deliver a Internegative for duplication and distribution

but then again...I'm not your client.

Thanks folks... good info so far

My client wants a THX certified mix room as it is a 2 min film trailer spot.... and they want a THX room - for better or worse.

I just called a few places - even for a small room the book rate is $750 an hour - yikes!

So - any other ideas? Anyone know where folks mix film trailers in 5.1 in LA?

I'd be mixing music and SFX and probably dialog - the whole shebang.

thanks

Hi. I'm a lead mixer at Mercury. We have two certified rooms, each with a dual operator Euphonix System 5-F with a Pro Tools HD system for each mixer. Call Michael Sable at 818-545-8090 (hope that's not against the rules). Although I'm sure you're an excellent mixer, you might think about having myself or one of the other mixers work with you on the project, just so it goes really smooth. The System 5s are fairly complex and it would be good to have an expert operator to work with. I just finished a project for Warner Independent and have some availability this week. Hey, give us a call!

Another lead to consider:

It's in Burbank near Warner. I mixed in that room before Marti took it over, when there was still a Neve digital console in there. It used to be THX certified, and I think he's kept it so. It is a good sounding room, and should be pretty affordable compared to some of the others you've looked at.

Micasa Multimedia in Hollywood. They have 3 cool THX rooms in Bela Lugosi's beautiful old mansion.

Though highly respected, that's more of a DVD prep facility. If this is for a theatrical trailer (as I believe was stated above), I'd want a larger room with cinema speakers.

You can find all THX studios in you area by doing a search on the THX website.

Oops DUH!

I will submit another vote for SSI. Gary Fradkin, who runs the tech side of things, is really easy to deal with and the facilities are very nice. They do a lot of trailer work at their facility, so I would definitely put them on your short list.

Cheers!
