Ok, dumb question...

How do you guys best deal with the older gear like an orignal 1176 or 1178 with pigtails? I don't have a patchbay and go straight into XLR Pro Tools.

How best I do this?

Thanks for the help.

Mic into pre, into limiter (or skip limiter if you want better fidelity), into PT. Patchbays do nothing for sound, so I'd skip it.

Oh sorry, thanks, but I meant the in's and out's are the screw-in pigtail kind, what adapters are best to convert to XLR in and outs?

No patchbay involved at all.

I made little XLR adapters for all my gear that has those. Just solder up a male and a female XLR end and attach to the back of the 1176. Then plug in your regular cables to the adapters you made.

Or if you're going to be plugging it in/out a lot and want to get super fancy with out using a patchbay, stick a panel in there with xlr jacks mounted to it and stick it on your rear rails. That will let you plug around in the back the same as if you had xlr in's & out's but you don't have to reach inside the rack, it's flush on the back.

Pig-tails to XLR pre-made

Does Mogami or Monster or anyone already make those, with that Y-connector on one end and then XLR (both male & female) on the other...does anyone already make those?

Hey, Roundbadge,

I hope you clean those XLR's when you do that. If they're old, they've probably got oxidation and other contaminants built up on the pins. You'd be shocked at what a noticeable impact (a bad one) that crud can have on the conductivity (and sound) of your signals.

it is good to keep a can of spray contact cleaner handy for just such emergencies.

Joel

BTW - is "RoundBadge" a reference to Grestch drums? I notice your avatar is of Keith Moon at a Premier kit, and just wondered. I've got a round badge Grestch maple snare that I dearly love.

A pencil eraser works wonders for the male pins... Erases the oxidation right off.
