(ITB mix to tape) vs (analog mix no tape)

'raise the volume on digital'

Hey, I have recently been given the choice, for monetary reasons, between one of these two situations. I wouldn’t like to get into a discussion about manufactures or equipment but would like to receive your opinions on this, from a general sonic viewpoint.

My problem is, I am happy with my ITB mixes with how everything sits etc, but I just hate the digital sheen two my finished bounced track. I do have an outboard comp on the 2buss btw. The main reasons I hate it are for that infamous digital colour, but mostly how audio doesn’t stay fully intact when listening to digital mixdowns at loud levels on playback devices. This is the famous “raise the volume on digital issue”, which I have heard that tape can help with. I am not too concerned either way about the extra sonic character of tape.

Now I have the choice of either dumping my digital mix to tape or using a summing box for analog summing with no tape. Which option do you think would help me get closer to solving this problem?

Smile go tape go

hi,
over the last couple of years ive had to do albums that were mainly in the box
but mixed through an analog desk/summing.
i.e electronic based band
but unless your really going to drive whatever summing box u get i'd say that spinning the mix to 1/4 or 1/2 inch tape via your 2buss comp and really smacking the tape should get you where u want to go, or even better get your stuff mastered by somebody that'll do it for you
i normally leave the computers off at my place and just use tape for tracking
but when ive had to this has saved the day.

hope this helps.
