For any non-owners lurking, I believe there is a Tape Op review coming out this coming week. Interesting to see what they have to say, although I have a fairly good idea..... |

Ha! Beat me to it Dan! I thought there were some good examples of applications in there that I hadn't thought of. Still learning this guy. It's deep and lots of options....

I got my SB4001 just a few days ago. I've used the Waves SSL plug in on every single mix I've done for the past 8 years. (30ms, 4:1, Auto Release) There was one year where the studio I was at had an Alan Smart C2. I loved it, but it left more to be desired. That THRUST circuit was awesome. Would have been even more awesome with a blend knob. Anyways... This SB4001 is "The One" and will never leave my mix bus. It just makes my mixes sound more "finished". It's a magic sheen that can make the audio more intense or smooth depending on the blend, ratios, and grind mode. The new A2 auto release is really cool as well. It works better for the genre's and faster tempos that I record where as the standard SSL Auto made things a little too smooth at times. The A2 sounds faster, aggressive and more in my face. Also, the variable release is KILLER!
I actually have the day of to wire up this guy and my new overstayers to the patch bays. (BTW, Overstayer VCA sounds very different when compared to the SB4001)
I'd be more than happy to post some clips of drum and mix bus. I record A LOT of heavy music, but could include some examples of slower tempos and softer music if necessary. Any preferences?

Hey guys. I've been researching buss comps for some time now and have used only the SSL comp in a console and a Smart C2. From my research, what sets the SSL comp above most of the others is the dual side chain for a better stereo comp. Is this true? Does the SB4001 have a dual or super side chain/turbo mod? Does it keep the stereo image pretty wide? For the money I don't see any better option. I was looking at the TK Audio BC-1, but this SB4001 sounds way more versatile.
Also, this would be my first 500 series module. Any advice on lunchboxes?
Thanks!
Brian

Hey guys, any updates on the Serpent? I'm really kickin' the idea around to go on my 2 bus. I currently have a Chameleon Labs 7720. Anyone know how they compare? The 7720 is pretty darn good for $500.
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks,
JROD

Yeah, I use it all the time still. Its the best option out there for the SSL kind of thing at the moment. The rare occasion I don't use it on the mix buss it finds its self nicely on the drums or some other tracks. I actually have a few of them. I am thinking of buying a 3rd for a set of mixes I have coming up that I know it will sound great on! The features sets make it so nice, I do love them. The price is great as well!

Happy owner here. LOVE the filters, boost and slope. Slope will really help tame excessive high end content. (cymbals tracked too harsh) Variable Release owns. Lives on two buss. Also excels at vocals. Very smooth when used on vox on the way in. This little guy is VERY flexible. A lot of options for the money.

About ready to do this, but I haven't heard anything about this versus the Drastic Obsidian. Any input???
Also, I like the features on the Serpent when compared to everything else. Just hope this thing sounds amazing.

I don't have Obsidian, but have put the SB4001 against Smart C2 and GSSL clone. Would say the GSSL is a bit grundgy with the C2 very clean and hifi sounding. The SB4001 is somewhere in the middle of them.

Maybe 65/35 in favor of the C2 (with an eq on the sidechain), although the 1968 shows up on there time to time as well. The SB4001 is nice because it has the filters built in, the downside is there are a lot of knobs in a small space, but such is life sometimes in 500 series land.

I have an Obsidian. I haven't had a chance to try the SB4001, though. If someone wants me to run a mix or something through the Obsidian, let me know. It wouldn't be a problem.
Regards,
Frank

Never listen to opinions regarding gear. For every 50 nobodies on Gearslutz that say a piece of gear doesn't sound good enough to cut it, I know at least one somebody who is cutting it in NYC with that piece of gear. ... www.diehipster.com |

Hey Frank, I may take you up on that. I think all my mixes of late would be a pain to recall, but I'll see if I can.
So, back to the Smart vs Serpent, do you find the Serpent sounding inferior or just hard to use with small knobs. It seems the features on the Serpent are superior to most other units. I can't tell you how important the HPF is on my Chameleon.
Then, on the other side of my mind I wonder if I should just drop the pesos and get a smart and a sidechain HPF. But that's a LOT more change...
Thanks,
JROD
