I'm sure the d00d won't mind me answering at least a couple of these, although he may want to elaborate further...

uh, good, or at least I think so... he's using Sennheiser 604s on the bottoms as well, out of phase. The added bonus is that it cuts down cymbal leakage.

The theory of less compression, gets a big thumbs up from me.. Ive been hoping the trend in that area takes a few steps backwards.. I find some recent albums where its really overdone can be very fatiguing to listen to, and it gets even worse when they are MP3's in an iPod etc..

I really liked the new Skid Row sound from the last album..

Sorry RPiper, don´t mean to offend you but I didn´t. Some tunes sound like a demo to me and the vocalsound has too much hair on top, especially when he screams. Plus the album lacks depth IMO. From a production and mixing perspective I like the Skid Row albums Michael did the best with Slave... being my favourite. Jut my $ 0.02

Cheers,
Bill

No problem.. I wasnt referring to the actual album production sound but rather the sound or style of the songs.. Stuff like Ghost and Born A Beggar i thought were cool but not what i was expecting..

To be honest i didnt like that albums production too much either.. I actually posted in another thread a while back how much i didnt like the snare sound.. It was very boxy and full of midrange i thought and i really dont like that tone.. I agree their earlier stuff with Michael was better.. Especially STTG..I think the first one shows its age a little more, but hey thats prob not a bad thing entirely..

I also like where mastering styles were around 91/92 when STTG came out.. Its not so over compressed but still loud, and transients get through enough for it to feel real.. Unlike nowdays where its becoming a wall of noise..

Same with me. Born A Bagger is a cool song with a very Skid Rowish chorus (wish Sebastian sang it )

Absolutely. Loudness vs. sound quality is always a trade off. This has been topic of so many discussions, but it can´t be stressed enough.

I love "Born A Beggar" (maybe because I love dogs). We did the original version for this song at WireWorld, in 1998, I think. The band had a different singer then and was called "Ozone Monday". They went back to SkidRow when Johnny Solinger took over the singing duties.

Unfortunately I'm not allowed to post any clips (I really would love to, because I very much love how it is coming out). The band is absolutely kicking ass, Johnny is singing his ass of and his voice is ideal for the new direction. Rachel is great as usual and did all his bass tracks in one day. His vocals have that "bratty" sound, which goes so well with this music style. Scotti is one of my favourite guitar players, his playing is totally the "I-don't-give-a-sh*t-let's-break-some-strings" style. He is very much into sound and fiddles until it's completely right. We got some very cool tones out of the Randalls. Everybody comes in well prepared to record their parts, I like that very much. The atmosphere in the studio couldn't be better, we are having a great time and lots of fun.

I am setting up for mixing right now. It should be completed in about two weeks. The mastering duties will be performed by Eric Conn at Independent Mastering here in Nashville.

Overall I think it's going to be a great album, maybe not what people expect from the "old" SkidRow (no ballads), but in itself it kicks major ass and I like the direction they are taking. Can't wait for you guys to hear it

Hey Michael it's Andy in Nashville. Thanks for calling me with the info the other day on the Chandler pres.
I would love to come up and sit in and help with tracking sometime. Or just to talk a little gear stuff.
I'm guessing the mic is a SM 81.

The last record I tracked, had a VOX mini-amp (the plastic one), with a Neumann U47, SM57, 421, Royer 121 and a few others. If I can find a pic I'll post it. Sounds killer on simple vers background guitar parts.....also we ran vocals back through it and blended it in with the main sound.

No, it's not the same cab. The red one is one out of Rachel's live backline and he just had two speakrs replaced (funny enough the same ones that got replaced in the cab in the picture) and it's still at the studio

Is anyone watching "Supergroup" on VH1? It's hard not to laugh or to feel awfully sorry for the other four guys they stuck with Sebastian. A little on topic/off topic momentary diversion. We will now resume the regularly scheduled (and thoroughly fabulous) thread.

Love Sebastain or hate him? I still kinda feel like he was the Signature to the sound of Skid Row. Nothing against the band, who I think are great guys..

In general I feel that way, have never got a band when the established singer leaves and outfit continues. There are some exceptions, but usually the band had not reached status yet. Iron Maiden comes to mind.

the biggest succes story with changing singers has to be AC/DC. Although Van halens first attempt worked, they were stretching when they shot for singer number three. Although I think that would have worked ok if they would have had even one good song on that album.

FWIW, I'm not questioning the talent or tone, just the sanity.

Best,

Hi, maybe Drumagog by Wavemechine Labs ist the right thing for triggering the drums. The software and can give good results with the individual close-miking tracks, no triggering mics required The software is directly triggered by the audio file .It has got a midi out, so BFD works fine with it.

I would also recomend aptrigga 2, I have had great luck with this plug, and gives a ton of options that are very functional. And surpisingly it is cheap.

That goes for me, too. Awesome voice, incredible singer ! Thickskin is not much more than a regular rock album. It´s Sebastian that made the difference IMO.

Bach certainly had a signature type of voice and it's certainly more than good, but I don't think he did any creatively. The really good songs were written by Rachel and Snake I believe. Didn't Bach basically just walk in and sing the songs that were already done on the first album?

If bach is ANYTHING like on that show I'd want nothing to do with him, he appears enough to drive just about anyone insane. Shhheeeeeshh, didn't the asshole rockgod personality go out the window with a TV tossed by John Bonham? I'm not trying to judge him as a person; I don't know him and he may be a great guy but as a band mate he's too self centered.

Hearing the new singer - I think he sounds very good.
He has his own vibe to him and he and the band seem comfortable in their skin, probably something very important at this stage of their careers.

If he's adding anything creatively than that shoudl help. I always felt SR had a couple-a-few excellent songs per disc but needed some strong melodic input from their vocalist, which I don't believe they got.

Personally, I'm expecting possibly the most well rounded album they've done to date. If they've got any standout songs like Eighteen or I Remember You than they may even have their best album.

I dig Supergroup! I think Sebastian's "frontman cheese factor" has been over dramatized on the show. It's edited to make him seem over the top. I mean, he's actually pretty laid back, compared to the model rock star in the era of his prime. What a great concept though! I hope VH1 runs a new series twice a year, like "Survivor".
