i vote for a speaker that is normaly used for micing the kick drum, and maybe run through an sansamp ? my second guess is the cheap $5 mic that you used on some of the latest king's x recordings for that weird vocal sound.

btw - happy birthday !

Darn it.

Ok I got it. AKG 451 was what I meant to say.

Do we get any hints? Is it on your mic list?

Well.. someone already said it but I would go with an E250 or a 4040, something about the high end of the kit. So hard to tell without knowing what the room sounds like but...

Anway Michael, thanks for posting this thread, very very cool, thank you!!

We got a winner. Congratulations VukOnCrack. Please get in touch with me (via email, see below) about the next workshop, probably July 8th through July 16th.

Here it is:

It was a fluke. During pre-production I had already disconnected the interface for recording and Nuendo resolved to the "built in audio" status. I was wondering what I was seeing on the meters, and when I checked it sounded crazy with the whole band playing. I decided to try it for the drum room. It sounds very cool when mixed in with the other drum mics. And as you might be able to tell, I'm not even using my trusted Shure 51 for this session (and the next few). The screen behind the mics must have some major influence on the sound too. I'm routing out of the line output (miniplug) and go straight into the converters. Nuendo is on direct monitoring and switched to input.

Now watch the price for used G4/500 powerbooks shoot through the roof on ebay...

We finished 6 complete drumtracks today, kicking butt, 6 more tomorrow and we're done with drums.

So much for that 4040 huh?

It is an interesting sound for sure, not very cool in a very cool sort of way... you know? LOL

Thanks Michael, much fun.

Dude! Wow, talk about a lucky, wild guess! I just figured it had to be something handy and not on the mic list. Once someone mentioned using monitors as a mic I thought I had blown it! Cool!

And what amazing generosity, Michael. My sincere gratitude (email forthcoming) to you.

It sounds like a laptop mic to me! Did I win?!?! Oh, the party's over?
Just Jokin
For the record, I was going to guess a 4050, since I'm now the 4050 crack boy! I just love that mic! Nah, really I was going to guess a $5 Radio Shack. One of those with the built in 1/4" cable. Those rock on Drums! But are made to work in the field. Under a Monster Truck!

Mr.Wagener, what guitargear was used in recording "Slave To The Grind"? Did you use ADA MP-1 or Rivera s120 heads or both perhaps? What else?

Wow! I got 2 G4/500 as Internet browsers for our clients. From now on I´ll name them "G4 Ti Room Microphones". There is no such ting as "too many microphones"....

Well, the drums are done, two days for 12 songs ain't bad. We're doing a few little drum part overdubs tomorrow and then it's on to bass. The guys are kicking butt.

There was too much to list on that record. By the time we recorded "Slave..." the guys had collected a whole bunch of vintage amps and we tried a lot of different ones on those tracks. The Rivera was in there, but I don't think we used the ADA on that album.

Yes I did. It's just soo much easier to set up. It sounds not quite as low as the homemade speaker but it's a bit tighter.
