hmm... it's ok, but I really think you should have gone for more keyboards...

Seriously though, it will take a while to get to my shores. I'll be sure to weigh in with my 2 cents though when it does.

Hello Mr Wagener,
first of all thank you for sharing all this info!! and congratulation for the great work with SR

Reading back this really interesting thread I have some questions:

- About Vocal compression (the vox is great), just curious if you have checked STC8 for a similar use of Distressor (really different dynamics from -20 GR at extreme compression at louder parts to light comp in the soft passage). If yes what do you think?

- I have seen that you compress 3/4 db with STC8...during mix do you usually use to compress lightly the single tracks and then press the Stc8 considering his 'transparent' feature?

- STC: do you use always in dual mono setting? Why? Do you prefer usually the ki mode?

- I'm not so familiar with Massive Passive so I cannot compare, but when I have seen the settings (that should be more or less: 80 hz shelf boost - 800 bell boost - 4.7 khz bell boost - 6 khz shelf boost) I was surprise to see the 800 boost and above all the gain values that seem very high about 8/10 db. Some comments? Does it often happen?

- I have seen that you use more mics for kick and bass...in which freq do you have usually the crossover points (if you have of course) for them? Do you cut some very low end (20/40 hz) when tracking or mixing?

- Some particular treatment for the guitars in the low mid part?

- Do you usually record at 24bit and? 44.1 or 96

Thank you!!!!

Haven't tried the STC-8 on separate tracks yet, it's nailed to the stereo bus.

I try not to compress the single tracks at all, if possible, recording and mixing. The lead vocal and drum room mics are the only tracks that get normally compressed.

I don't want the left side dynamics influencing the right and the other way around. I flip between ki and hara, depending on the song, no rules.

The Massive Passive is a different beast, don't go by what you see on the dials. These are just what I ended up with on this mix, but the settings tend to be somewhat similar on other records.

I use a "clicky" mic for inside the kick and the Sub-Kick for the outside. In the mix I normally low pass the sub-kick at around 300Hz

I know this is kinda old, but Michael asked what people thought of the album, I bought it and loved it. The way Michael mixes guitars is like no other, the guitars you hear today bore me . vocals as well. Thanks Michael for giving me something to listen to and buy, I havent bought a cd in years... jody from chattanooga.

stumbled across this thread when I broke out my old STTG album. LOVE the production on that. I bought RPM and it just arrived today. Gonna have a listen after a bit! Also bought Subhuman Race -- heard a couple of tunes off that album years ago, but never bought the cd. Hopefully that arrives soon as well.

Michael's production and mixing always sound great and inspired. . not "factory made" like a lot of stuff. .

I was in 2 shows in Spain, Madrid and Barcelona, in 2006 when SR was touring. I was the FOH tecnician of a spanish rock band that supported them in both shows.
I remember very well. Their FOH tecnician just used compressors for 4 vocals. Only gates for drums....the player is really tight and amazing in live situation!. The singer didn't get so high as in recording (suffered) but did it well also!
I learnt to play the kick really loud in live!!!

OK, my review of the album RPM (albeit 5 years after its release, haha)

Sounds awesome! I love a few of the songs (especially White Trash). Maybe I can relate? haha. ALOT of attitude in this record, and you can hear that in the performance, recording and mix.

I love how the record sounds and it's especially cool knowing all the details behind it.

I still think STTG is my favorite -- most likely because that record came out when I was a freshman in HS and it blew me away and I used to play along to it all day in my room. (very poorly) mind you. That record is very nostalgic for me.

Anyway, thanks Michael for a great piece of work and it's going to live in my car cd player for quite some time to come!
