water bottle in front was to capture a lower frequency in the kick by sticking a B52 in a balloon and placing it inside the bottle. And.... did anyone believe me? I needed weight in front of the kick so that it wouldn't move forward. haha Jason

I've had fun before WITH a water cooler bottle (empty) with a 58 dangled from a drum stick inside, either infront of the kick - or post recording on the board infront of the nearfields with the kick channel in solo. Either filter to subby resonant foolishness, or let the clang ring true!!!

and the last - this place has no mics, hence the se1a on hats which actually was pretty good, and the d112 on kick which worked out ok too, the tamburo drums are very pleasant beasts tho..

Umm, (truly) sorry to inject something controversial (and unrelated) in here, but Craig Z - that track is pretty great. However, it sounds VERY separated, like ProTools recording. If it was printed to tape, the sounds would mix "together" like classic records do, instead of that separation. True, maybe your taste is different, but the style leads me to believe you love classic players and albums. As the style is very classic - and very well done - it would seem to be an appropriate way to make it complete... even run a rough mix down to cassette once if you think I'm wrong. See what happens... please? |

This was a very quick Mp3 of an unmixed ( faders Up ) tracking session...as you can hear NOTHING was mixed. Probably not any room mics in that as well.... I agree with you tho... and yes, it was tracked directly to Tools. cz

Here's a "posed" shot from a recent photo shoot for new studio propaganda. There would usually be room mics too.

Here's the drum micing for a metal band, in my home studio. Mics are : Snare : SM57 (top & bottom) SM81 (top) Bass drum : Beta 91 Toms : Beta 98 on 10' and 12' toms, Oktava MK012 on 16' tom (my old MD421 doesn't work anymore, and the Oktava did the job perfectly) OH : C414 ULS x 2 Hi-hat : SM81 I'm going to buy some BAE mic pres for proximity mics, and i already run the OH into a Mindprint DTC. Sounds good, can't wait for the new pres ! I saw all of you use dynamic mics on toms, most of the time MD421s. Why never use condensers (like Beta 98 ) ? It seems condensers are not as easy to place in a mix as dynamics, maybe this explains a bit ? As said before, I have an old MD421 U4 (grey tuschel version), which I used to put on the floor tom, but I dunno why it doesn't work. Maybe it's just a insignifiant problem, but I can't fix it (I dunno anything about electronics ). I guess i'm going to sell the mic at a low cost, if someone is interested into repairing it...

Yes and no. They are the Tape Op group buy ribbons. Same mics different name. A group of us on the Tape Op board got together with PPA and got a really good deal on a pair. They're pretty cool, but I haven't used that a ton yet. I did an acoustic guitar/vocal record and used them as room mics and they were great. Here's a sample of them as OH spaced similar to the picture. No other mics, just OH from that week I got them. Also check out Shiny Box they are importing them too. They've even got a 'custon' transformer upgrade and a smaller mic. Thanks for the re-size Djui5! | |
