Wish we had the room.~~~....like many other home studios with a small tracking room---many are looking for "alternative" methods for applying drums to their demos. We track with the artist in the room (phones).....so they have the inner action, but with little or no bleed ...and the editing is easy. Our clients are mainly single/duo and do not wish to apply their funds towards a larger studio & mic set-up for real drum kit.

**** but thanks for the response--- the "digital drums" ideas should probably be removed to a totally different thread

judy's kit

i will need to make a phone call to see if this recording is around. the mics on the tom's were SR69's those TEC award winning babies that eat acoustic sources for lunch... try one and prove me wrong... our FLEX mics are the same capsule and electronics. they are even easier to position on toms cuz.. uh... they are flexible?? har.
peace.. how come every time I post there is this digital drum thing following me.
I've been playing a jazz kit since I was 8 yrs old... now I have some alesis drum machine torn apart in an old cardboard box in my studio along with it's matching sequencer... anybody want it?? It sounds...well....like a bunch of loose stuff in a box if you mic it when you kick it across the room...

Jeff-peace just razzin ya cjogo!!!!

No, no!

You shouldn't mic up the KAT. Mic up the AE trying to mic up the KAT and monitor the producer instead. This should produce some kind of shrill sound that, run through an Eventide 3000 would give a loud bop resembling a broken kickdrum. Which you eventually should fix.

You lazy bum!

the KLAK is the added bonus click-track metronome with the Kat system

I know "sounds like a cheap machine recorded in a cardboard box"....but just a client wanting to knock out quick tunes in the studio

Bo J. uses: B.L.U.E. , Royer, ADK, Earthworks, one SM57 and one D112

Note that each pair of toms has a EW on them, so does the snare in addition to the SM57.

All toms are miced from the bottom because there was no acess or room from the top.

(its Terrry Bozzio if you are wondering)
Hah...get some e604...you could mount them anyware...

How about "outside" of the studio. This is from our MOAW recording sessions with King's X last weekend

No. This is just part of the song "Allison". We recorded the drums in three different ways:
1) inside the studio with conventional mic setup (close mics and some room mics including Fritz)
2) outside (see picture)
3) back inside with a minimal mic setup (3 mic technique with Fritz added in)
method 1) is going to be used in the INTRO and CHORUSES
method 2) will be used in the VERSES
method 3) is going to be used in the BRIDGE

We also shot video during the recording of this song and I am going to mix "Allison" in surround for a DVD extra witth the album.

It's going to be an interesting mix, to say the least.

I gather that "Fritz" is your binaural head. In the photo it looks like you have the roof support column directly in front of it. Was this to further block the center image?

Yes, Fritz is the Neumann KU100 binaural head, sorry I have gotten so used to his nickname, I assume everybody calles him that.

Fritz has a little acoustic "hole" right in front of his nose, he doesn't pick up as well directly from the front. I wanted him in the middle of the drumkit, to get a even stereo image and I thought that the pole being off to either side might do worse damage than being in the middle.

I'll bet you got a nice bit of ambience from the roof overhang as well. I remember last year's BBQ conversations under there, and the fellowship of slutz was warm as the afternoon sun. I imagine the drum sound benefitted from the same kind of warmth.

Enjoy your day and best jealous wishes to all.
