Very nice. Simple setup that relies on a great room to achieve your sound.

Ideal IMO.

Also, that's a cool idea having the subkick below the conga. Have to try that some time.

We just have limited mics and inputs ---- but the room makes up for it ~!!

I saw this recently and was wondering if you are anyone has tried using a shotgun mic at the end of the kick tunnel? Also does the kick tunnel provide a better low end since the tunnel allows for lower frequencies to fully develop without refelction.

Is that a stack of tires in the corner? Bass trap or road vibe?

Oh my god. This kid is as talented, at 15 as ANY drummer I've seen in the rock world currently. watch out. He taught himself classical Piano as well(started 6 months ago) and guitar.

Fully endorsed by OCDP, Paiste, Vic firth.

fuucker.

Here's his abbreviated kit for this session:
Beta 51, Ns 10, 57's on snare, 87 rack, 421 floor, 414 OH's, Royer 121's room.
love this thread, and this post now that this guy is playing for NIN haha! nice chronicling someones career through the sluttyness that we all possess.

Here's a kit with far too many mics on it, no prizes for recognizing the kit

Actually there are two independent mic setups on it, so that we didn't have to spend time changing them between tracks. (multi mic, and 3 mic) Also we only had 3 e22's for the toms so the high tom mic is an Audio Technica. Room mics are not visible, 2 sets (again to save time) fet 47's near, and a distant M-S pair

I'm going to be using the Sontronics Orpheus as my overheads for a session next week. What would be the best stereo technique for these mics that will get the least phase issues as possible?

Thanks.

@Matt Thomas:
I heard one of Lesley's new Tracks on DRS3, recently.
I remember her from her old band (Redwood, they played at my club some 5-7 years ago) and the new stuff is quite a departure from that, but in a good sense.
I hope the effort (and money) you guys have put into this record will get the recognition it deserves. (I guess I don't need to tell you not to expect too much from the CH market.)
All the best

well firstly, he was a very nice guy and very professional. And he drinks a lot of starbucks.

I couldn't believe how lightly he plays, its almost like he is pulling against gravity to stop the sticks from hitting the drums. We had all the gains on the Neve desk up full and there was still barely any level getting to tape (disk).

I had programmed all the drum parts on the demo versions, and I had to keep telling him not to play exactly what I programmed, "play something more like Steve Gadd would play", but a couple of places he insisted, saying he loved how counter it was to what he would have thought of playing. He had some great bass ideas too.

The songs with groove were amazing, his playing of these ones just leaves you grinning from ear to ear. And the engineer had to be on his toes and ready to press record at any moment , hence the copious number of mics on the kit, so as not to get in the way of the creative flow when changing setups.

Thanks Andy, I realise the swiss market is a particularly difficult one. We do have a great product though, and so long as we can get the word out (thats the difficult part when you're not playing throw away pop) then I'm confident we'll get at least some success. If not, I'm really proud of the album anyway, and it was a great experience thumbsup

Great stories! I've heard some of those traits before about Gadd (playing the demo groove because he liked it so much, the light but solid playing, the caffeine addiction). Just such a cat!

Thanks for sharing, and good luck with the project!

The mic collection in this set is not that high-end. The room, on the other hand, is one of the top concert halls in my country.

Note (in some pictures):
- the organ
- the steinway concert grand (which I recorded, but was so exited and forgot to take pictures)

No need to say that the drums sounded huge.

Also note the crappy iPhone pictures.

It's funny how he can play so lightly but still have such consistency and power in his tone.
