LOL I like the "John Densmore" wallet on the snare trick!

What is that for...to mute the ring on the snare?

Either this guy just bought some new DW cymbal stands or he never takes the tags off things he buys. There are 2 DW tags visible hanging on a couple of the stands.

Yes, to remove the ring. But I learned it from Bruce Swedien. Sounds great!

2 new über-buff 9000 series cymbal stands and I never bother to take tags off. There are tags on the heavy bags too and I've had them for years.

Actually not to bad. A little brighter than I expected. I will probably go back to ribbon mics next time though.

OK. I have to post a wallet shot.
This was a session w/ our own Sigma.
When he wants some form of dampening, he'll ask for a "wallet" as a generic term.
But this time he says, "take your wallet out and lay it on the snare".

Lottsa mics on this kit. We would change snares/sticks/playing style, & he would open up different mics.

GMS kit, 70's Gretsch snare
OH - akg 451 pair - single U87 - single Altec 633a
kick - D112 in - U87 out
snare - beta 56 - 414 uls
snare bttm - 57
toms - 421 - re20
rooms - SP - TB1 pair
hats - 451

Some I change, some I leave alone. That snare sounds great & the head has been on there for ages. Ever change a head & the drum doesn't sound quite right no matter what you do or how ya tune it..??

We have a 64 Slingerland snare that I love that has the same head from 2003. I'm going to ride that one till it gives out! thumbsup

In some occasion, i find that old and worn head will work fine to get a certain tone.
but in general , new head will work better for me.

And to answer you question, no i never change a drum head and the drum doesn't sound good...

Here's a session I did for the Canadian artist Thornley. We recorded at Phase One studios in Toronto with producer Nick Raskulinitz. Nick had just finished recording Rush and had some great stories! This is the DW kit that Neil gave him so we had to use it! It actually helped me make up my mind to switch to DW.

Here's a session I did at Brian Adam's studio, the Warehouse, in Vancouver. It was for a Canadian Idol winner named Chad Doucette. Danny Craig from Default was producing. What a great sounding room!! I thought 57s on top of the toms and 421s on the bottom was weird, but it ended up sounding great.

Here's a session I did at Henson Studios in LA, Room B. What a fantastic facility. Worked with an artist named James Hart, which later called the project Burn Halo. Zac Maloy (The Nixons) was songwriting and producing. I was very very happy with the recording. Sounded pretty organic compared to some of the over-processed things I play on. I like the two snare mic set up!

This is the big room at Ocean Way Studios in Nashville. I recorded the drums for the 3 Doors Down album 17 Days here with Johnny K producing. We started with Pearls but switched to Gretsch. Good choice! I was being razzed for being a Canadian among southerners as you can tell by my snare head!

Here's some shots from Vogville Studios in Coquitlam BC. Recorded for the band Jet Black Stare. Gordini Sran Engineering/Producing along with Jeff Johnson. Couple of different shots of different snares. we started with a pearl kit, and it turned into almost a DW kit. Another session which made me switch drum companies!

Here's a session I did at the Armourey Studios in Vancouver. This studio kicks ASS. Worked there many times. Still belongs to the Fairburn family. I think this session was some songs for a Canadian band called Faber Drive.

This is a Promo Studio appearance I did with 3 Doors Down at Hilversum Studios in the Netherlands. Great great studio. We ended up staying for a week and working on new material. These are the only shots I have. This is back in 2004.

Here's a session I did in 2004 at the Armoury again with Theory of a Deadman. Some B Side stuff. Wasn't crazy about that ride but that's all that was on hand. That house Ayotte kit is dope. 24x18 kick. A beauty.

Back at the Armoury again just recently. Can't say who the artist is because they want to have a proper press release but the tunes were awesome and had a great time with producer Brian Sperber.

Holy crap are you guys bored yet? I didn't realize I had so many pics! Okay, here's my "Day Job". This is recording our latest album Dark Horse with legend Mutt Lange. Brought some extra snares. This is a small room, and really doesn't sound that special. So, LIVING PROOF that you can get a good drum sound from a small room! And sell a schwack of records!

This was the set up for almost the entire All The Right Reasons album. Joey Moi and the band producing. For "Far Away" and "Photograph" we used Chad's Ayotte kit which was 10, 12, 16, and a whopping 26x18 kick! It was cool, but after I brought in my 22" they definitely liked the punch alot better. That's my drum tech and I having a beyotch of a time tuning on a particular hung over day!
